R50/53 Daily driver or toy?
It's a perfect combo package for me... Daily driver w/enough cargo room for work, yet responsive enough to be my weekend toy, too. Can't think of a single car that would be a better fit!
Since it's my only car, I chose to keep the mods within the JCW family.
But I wouldn't mind a rear sway and short shift kit, tough.

Lucky right now to say it is a toy.
The Ford Focus ZX-3 has 125,000+ miles on it.....trade in would be nothing and to sell it wound not be worth it. So we kept the Ford when we got the Mini. Lucky for now.

Cast another vote for "both". It's my daily driver, but far too much fun to be called such a name
Funny... I was talking to one of my professors who was lamenting the field trips required by the school on the basis that nobody would want to drive 3 hours to Macon. I corrected him.

Daily Driver. I "commute" about 2000 miles a month. In fact my "toy" a 73 914 2.0S isn't getting driven enough, I had to jump start it thge last time I pulled it out of the garage!
My only car... but I only drive it 2-3 days/week at the moment. If I'm leaving Manhattan I take it, otherwise I'm on the subway. HOWEVER, it's so much fun I *wish* I commuted more!
When I finish grad school I want to get out of the city and motor!

Daily Driver as a Toy
I drive mine ('06 MCS) every day but still consider it a toy.
Finally landed a job about one mile from home after a horrific commute previously - soon I found myself taking the long way because it just wasn't enough quality driving time.

Daily toy!
It is my first and right now only car, so it gets driven for anything and everything. However, my commute is only about 8 miles each way, so luckily it doesn't rack up that many miles -- only at 5,300 miles since delivery July 28th and that includes two round trips to northern Vermont and trips to RI and NH. Its an awesomely fun car to drive. I smile everytime I walk up to it even!

Daily Driver - here. I commute 70 miles a day, just retired my 99 Saturn (after 230,000 mi) Replaced with 02 MC CR (Hastings).
The commute has never been better.
This is the most fun I've had in a car since . . . okay, this is the second most fun I've ever had in a car.

Mistro, I have a '72 914 1.7 which I am going to have to sell...my MINI is on order. So are you saying that the MINI (mine will be an MCSa Convertible) will be as fun as the 914 over the long haul...I hate to give it up, but I don't have a choice, really. I specifically was looking to replace the 'fun factor' of the 914.
Toy...02 MCS with 14K on it, that qualifies it as a toy. When we first got it, it was our most dependable car so it started life with us as our interstate- cruiser when we travaeled to visit the grand kid. Now we have something else for the job when the weather isn't so great. As a matter of fact it still as its highway tires on (205/60/15) mounted on OEM wheels.
I intend to keep this little beauty forever. I've got a good start on it already, all work on the car is done by MINI of Pittsburgh. I have every work order sheet ever done on it and I'm going to keep it that way.

Good choice of a second car. I am afraid of running into the same problem. Not driving the 914 enough. I actually had a switch installed in the engine bay that lets you disconnect the car from the battery. I do this every time the car will sit for more than a couple of days.
