Windshield

I love my three month old 06s.
Fun to drive on the twisties.

BUMMER:
A big rig threw a rock at me this morning and broke my windshield making a hole the size of a golf ball. Scared the living poop out of me.

Drive careful out there and watch out for anything.

I've had some close calls following trucks. What a shame that it had to ruin your windshield.

This is a golden opportunity to get a PPG brand windshield.

Your lucky. It took exactly 30 days for me. I replaced mine with PPG. I had 1 small chip a month later, but everything has been good since that.

But I make a point not to follow any construction equipment/trucks.

just for us owner's in waiting that haven't had to go through this yet... what is a PPG brand windshield?

i know from reading that the OEM windshields are softer and have heard that it is best not to get broken windshields replaced by the dealer but by a local glass place that uses better glass. here's hoping I don't have to deal with this, but I want to be prepared.

Another really good reason not to follow the big muddy guys too close is ROCK CHIPS. Our little cars seem to have a front end that was engineered by the bmw to attract rocks. I got a bunch before I figured this out. Now I really avoid getting too close to the back of big trucks or anything else that seems like it might throw a rock at me.

It is a windshield made by a company called PPG. Any auto window place should know exactly what you are talking about and be able to get it for you.

The Rock

I think I should have mentioned that the big rig was going in the opposite direction. I was on my way to work going down a two lane highway/road. I was doing approximately 65mph the big rig was coming at me I think at 55mph. The rock was doing approximatley over 100mph when it hit my windshield. Right?

I will ask about PPG. Does it cost more? What is the advantage of useing PPG?

My wife had the same thing happen a little over a week ago. The rock hit about 6 inches down from the top of the windshield and 4 or 5 inches to the left of the left edge of the rear view mirror. It left a bullet hole a bit bigger than a dime - really annoying since it is in the driver's line of vision. We had a repair done on it but it is still very noticeable - at some point I will have a PPG replacement installed.

The MINI is hands down the crap-catchingest car I've ever owned. I've been SO careful, but my windshield has two impact crazes on it -- one the size of a tangerine at bottom center, mostly within the blackout zone, and the other at top center, mostly behind the rear view mirror, about the size of a dime. AND the poor little car's snout/hood front edge is a magnet for chips and dings and bonks. You have to put a bra on there or get used to it.

Scratches are like scars... Badges of honor! And remember Chicks Dig Scars!

Unlike bras on women, bras on cars do not enhance the beauty of the car...

Well, technically, the rock was probably doing 25-30. Because as soon as it got out from behind the truck and didnt have anything to break the air for it, so it would have to slow down because much of the effort being put into forward momentum, is now being used to break through the air. But then add your 65, so the impact, if you were parked, would be like the rock hitting your windshiels at about 90-95.

I've had PPG for awhile now and it is not getting anywhere near as many stone chips as my original one would . Good choice in my opinion.

Apparently PPG glass is a little thicker than the OEM glass and therefore a little stronger and presumably less likely to chip. There are other threads (I'm lazy, but if you search you will find them) that apparently dispute this claim and suggest that even PPG glass gets chips and nicks in it but PPG is cheaper than getting the glass replaced at the dealership.

My OEM windshield cracked in under a year from a tiny little spec of a rock hitting it. I had it replaced with CSG glass which I highly recommend. A few months ago, I had a huge rock hit my CSG windshield & it only left a tiny little pit which I cannot see & can only find if I run my fingernail across the glass. CSG installed for a year now & I have no other pits
