R50/53 Cooper S gas mileage false or true?
I guess at 20K miles my MSCS is finally broken in. When new, I only averaged 24MPG but now that the Mini is broken in I am averaging 26MPG WOOHOO :impatient That saves me a whopping $81 a year or $6.75 a month. What will I do with all that extra cash
i am monitoring my mpg but today i felt my car was sick. i had filled it up with 'shell' gas and it seemed to have gotten an indigestion. my car was whining and vroooming but going nowhere. just loud and could feel the gas sucking out of my pipes without justice. i will let you know how i do on this tank of gas. first time putting shell on my mini.
This is strange on my 06 MCS i have about 7800 miles on the car right now and i average about 20.8 to 21.4 mpg according to the OBC, my dad as a 05 MCS JCW with about 20k miles on it and he gets 25.6 to 26.1. Thats a pretty big difference. Especially when i see most people averaging around 25mpg. I wonder if my car is still breaking in?
I found to get the best mileage use the reading of the OBC that displays current consumption. It shows you the gas mileage as you drive. This way you will learn how you should accelerate, brake and cruise. I would get low 20's and after I learned how much quick stop and go driving or varying speeds while cruising can lower gas mileage I can now get high 30's with the a/c off and lower-mid 30's with the a/c. My range goes into the mid 400's where before I would be like 280 after filling my tank. Driving over 2000 rpm also burns fuel faster and get to 6th gear as quickly as possible.
First,, the milage posted on the windows of new cars are not tested and proven by the manufacturer. They are calculated in a EPA lab based on info provided by the manufacturer for a perticular car. ( NOTE, is is suppost to change in the next couple of years,, to become acutal proven mpg. )
Im thinking the milage we are all seeing is really impacted by geographical location. which of course is a given.. but some of you are really down there... In az we have mostly flat streight roads at appx 1300ft ASL. I was getting in the 30-33 range combined... ( now 27-30 range with the 15%pully ) Still around 35+ on highway if I say below 70 ( which isnt often mind you

I have only 3K on my 06 and up until a couple weeks ago I was getting 25-27 combined with buttloads of traffic. However, after reading the "things you didn't know about your MINI" thread (https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...d.php?t=61035), I've been following a tip that seems to have improved mileage and performance.
Before you start the car you should leave the key in the start position and let the diagnostic cycle run its complete course. After it is done, crank her over. Since I have done that, the car runs smoother and mileage seems to have improved dramatically. If I could find that last gas receipt I could tell you how much.

I average about 25/26 mpg doing normal commute driving which is primarily secondary roads. I've never gotten more than 28 mpg doing highway driving while cruising about 10-15 mph over the limit.
FYI............these are not computer averages........I divide gallons used/mileage. Cars computer always gives better readings.

I just did another round trip to Fort Worth, I averaged 34mpg for the round trip. That was with the cruise set on 85-90 (showed 34.5 for that leg, A/C on) and then on the way back I had the cruise set in the low 80s (started trip back to Austin at 2:00am, AC compressor off, windows closed).
That's about where I would expect my mileage for that kind of trip.

37.9 combined city highway on my last tank. Now if I can only find a CD for the stereo that plays nothing but the sound of a supercharger! (That's the only thing missing).
Has anyone ever ripped a super-charger off an MCS and ran it as a conventional MC? At what price per gallon of gasoline does that begin to happen?? At $6 a gallon MCS owners start to think about it, at $10 a gallon those supercahrgers start flying out from under the bonnet from coast to coast.

Our MCS has about 6300 miles on it and since about the 3rd tank of gas it's been getting just over 29mpg driving local (about 25%highway, 25% city, 50% windy hilly country roads). When I took it on a 10 hour round trip one day trek I was hitting about 34mpg (98%highway at about 75-80).
my 4th tank with shell is horrible. in the middle of my tank, i had to fill it or mix it, you can say, to make my mini feel better. after doing so, my obc mpg showed improvement. i am excited to see how well my mini will do with the mixture of v-power & techron.

One night I did a little test to see how high I could get my MPG. So, right after filling up at Chevron with their highest octane gas, I reset my MPG meter on the computer and headed home. When I got on the freeway, I got into 6th gear, set the cruise at 60, and tried to keep some space between me and other cars (and big trucks) to keep drafting from messing with the numbers too much. The trip was about 20 mostly freeway miles, and by the time I pulled off the freeway, the meter was flirting with 40MPG (over and just under). After three lights and some surface streets, I was down to 36MPG as I pulled into the parking garage. For those of you familiar with the Puget Sound area, this little test was from Renton to downtown Seattle.
Of course, I tend to drive much faster than 60 on average, and since air resistance is a cubed number in the power equation, it has a dramatic effect on my MPG, pushing it down to around 24-28 on average.
In short, if you are worried about gas mileage, the best recommendation I can give is slow down, and use the cruise control.
While this little test was by no means scientific, I have seen similar results when out driving with the Puget Sound Mini club on club drives where we are carefully obeying all the speed limit signs…
