R50/53 Rear Window Explosion
Rear Window Explosion
My mom was backing her 04 MC into an open parking space in a car park, when all of a sudden she heard a crack then BANG...and her rear window exploded. She has no idea what happened. We guess that something from somewhere hit her window and the initial hit/crack cause the rest of the window to explode. Her MINI dealer is quoting her $495 to replace and has to wait for the special order. Has this happened to anybody?....is the MINI dealer the way to go on rear windows?....I've had my front one replaced a couple of times by local repairers, but not the back. Thanks!
Actually, a while ago I wanted to buy an old used Volvo DL240. I've read about the same thing happening to a few of these cars. What happened was something like the rear defroster acting up and overheating rapidly, causing the glass to expand and then explode, or something like that.
I found this on Alldata :but it pertains to Cabrios... I didn't see anything for hardtops.
Circa 1978 I was riding in the way back of my mom's Pontiac Grand LeMan's Wagon (by "Way back" i mean the rear facing fold up seat) and the window totally exploded. My mom says it had something to do with the rear defroster. Imagine what that does to a 4 year old! I was scarred for life. To this day, anytime I see a car with fake wood paneling I break out into a cold sweat.
True Story... really! (except for the cold sweat part)
P.S. The site where that Pontiac dealer where my parents bought that battle wagon was is now the Mini dealer I bought my MCS!

When a speaker fell on my car at AMVIV, it hit about 1/4 inch of the rear glass. Seriously, the impact area on the rear glass was smaller than a dime. The whole rear window shattered to beads. It was only held in place by the tint film.
My insurance company had me go to a local shop for repairs. Fixing the dent in the C-pillar and paint, replacing the rear and rear side glass and getting both windows re-tinted came to about $900. The glass is non-OEM.

Something along these lines?

I was driving on I-95 Northbound when the same thing happened to me in northern NC. I got out of the car and saw a grapefruit sized hole in the back, and the rest was just absolutely shattered. I guess someone kicked up a rock and it went through the side windows and out the back window?
