Quick Background: I'm a month away from graduating college(extremely busy right now) in NYC where I live. Ordered my car at Peabody MINI, in Mass. My mother lives in NH. The cooper will be my first manual car. I'm supposed to pick it up on friday.

Here's the deal: My MA just sent me an email saying I'll need to bring my NY plates with me on friday. I don't have any plates! I don't think you can get plates without regisration, and I can't register without the title and what not that I thought I'd be getting from the dealer. Is this a standard thing the mini dealer's expect you to do? I was planning on useing the registration grace period as long as I could, leaving the mini at my mom's house untill I could get to know the clutch a little better, but this makes it sound like you don't get one from my dealer??? I am very confused!!!!!

Please help me out here guys. I'm going crazy just knowing the mini is in already but now it looks like if things get anymore complicated, I might have to pay the dealer and then leave it there for a month!!!!!

 

You can register the car anywhere you want and pick it up that day. The catch is that you'll have to pay whatever taxes are required in the state you register it in. Is MA more or less than NY? And, when you finally do register it in NY is their a penaly? Call the NY DMV and they should be able to help you. Or, better yet, call Mini in MA, the sales dude or dudette will know all the answers.
