Opps!

I drove the Mini yesterday and thought the breaking in was over at 1200miles.

So at 1225 miles I went over 4500rpms but as I was doing this I did not feel right about it. I asked Pep'r to check the book again, and sure enough it said 1250 miles.

Looks like we are going to have to sell it and start all over again.

Na just kidding we will keep it and I am sure the Mini forgives me.

I found that

4500 RPM in 6th was over 100 MPH! PRetty good for break in period!

Matt

ps, a lot of people think you should hammer a new motor to seal the rings best and that going soft just doesn't do it.

Going to 4,500 rpm with 50 miles to go is not going to give the motor fits. By 1,200 miles, the rings have pretty much done their seating thing. I would gradually increase the revs from the 1,250 mile point and would avoid long stretches on cruise control until somewhere around the 3,000 mile mark.

It is unfortunate that that concept is still around. If each person who advocates that approach was required to put up a bond that would re-imburse anyone who followed that advice and suffered rings that failed to seat, the concept would be extinct by now. There is a reason why MINI, BMW and a whole bunch of manufacturers do not advocate that approach to break-in.
