The spoiler is more for looks.

The rear of the MINI is square, therefor it creates a "vacuum." The back of all MINIs get dirty, so some degree. The best thing to do is get a California Duster. Just throw it in the back, and dust 'er off when needed.

The rear spoiler makes no difference one way or the other. Between my two MINIs I've had experience with: no spoiler, the stock MC spoiler, the stock MCS spoiler, and the aero kit spoiler.

The MINI has the aerodynamics of a brick.

I think the "bumps" on the C-pillar of the 2007s are an attempt to address this problem as well as a general increase in aerodynamics.

The Drag Coefficient (Cd) of the 2001-2006 MINI is about 0.36. The convertable is 0.37. Interestingly, this same Cd (0.36) is shared by the mid-1990s Eagle Talon, the 1986 Ferrari Testarossa, and the 2001 Honda Civic.

The Cd claimed by the 2007 MINI is about 0.33. Cars sharing this Cd are the 2006 Dodge Charger, the 2006 Audi A3, the 1987-91 Mazda RX-7 FC3C, and the 2004 Subru Impreza WRX STi.

By contrast, the 1996 General Motors EV-1 had a Cd of 0.195!

Oh, and the Scion xB's Cd...0.35! More "streamlined" than the current MINI...but not by much!

Strange, according to ZDnet, the cd of the scion xB is.....35!
so I was wrong, and this is getting way of subject.
I have tried factory mud flaps, not much help with basic dust and grime.
What has seemed to help is a really good cleaning and wax job. I did the whole clay bar and the nano wax thing (no zano in stores here and I wanted to wax now!) Surprisingly this has kept the back of the mini cleaner than it has ever been, in it's short 6 week life!
