R50/53 Will an 800 Mile drive kill a new MCS?
To further detail your emissions question. Since you bought the car out of state even though it meets the CA emissions specs, the DMV will require you to have your new car Smog inspected before you register it and you will lose your 4 yr exempt status for smog inspections. Just went through this ordeal with a brand new out of state car bought in Nevada for convience.
HOWEVER, the Dmv never asked to see any documents from the out of state dealer. If i had not opened my mouth??? Who knows if they would of track me down.

Assael BMW
Where in California are you? I bought my 04 MCS at Assael and they gave me the deal of deals-- $1750 over MSRP
. Brand new MCS-- only 2 miles on it. Whether or not you can get the same deal I am not sure. What I did was get a price quote from them and then I hopped on the cell phone right in front of the salesman and his manager and started dealing with another local dealer. A dirty tactic, but all's fair...
Assael moves the most minis in california and they will do pretty much anything for a sale. Stay away from Crevier and Irvine BMW-- Crevier is good but a $5000 markup and Irvine did not seem to know what they were talking about...

If I take delivery of a brand-new MCS and then immediately drive it 800 miles, am I asking for trouble? What kind of break-in does the car require? I suppose I could have the thing shipped via truck but the point of all this is to save money.
Also, to anybody who has purchased an MC/MCS out-of-state and brought it to California: do all MINIs meet CA emissions requirements?

It took me 17 hours, with a 4.5 hour nap and a few stops for fluids (both adding and subtracting). When I pulled into my driveway, the average speed was 75 mph!
Also, the Mini is a 50 state emission car, but you will need an inspection etc. make sure the dealer knows what you're doing so you don't pay to register full time where you bought it. You'll pay CA reg fees (read sales tax) when you import the car.....
Matt
not that great when compared to out of state.

Guys.. I got my MCS this past summer. A week after getting it, I took it on a road trip that consisted of about 200 miles of highway driving. Then spent a week of normal around town driving, and then it was 200 miles back home again.
Now.. I was aware of not "punching it" and staying below 4500 rpms.. but I wasn't aware of the need to vary the RPMS. Obviously this was not a problem around town and non highway driving. But, I remember that I did use cruise control at about 60 mph here and there on my road trip.
Do you think I have done any damage to my car? What would this type of driving during the break in period do to the car?

Very UNLIKELY you caused any harm.

I picked up my MCS in September at MOTH in New York. Took the ferry to Connecticut to see my mother. My daughter drove the car from New Haven to Hartford the first night. We drove it a little around New Haven the Next day, and then to Central Virginia, dropping off my daughter in D.C. - I have had no problems with the car, keeping the speed under 70 for the long trip. 800 miles should not do anything.
Do you think someone who leases a car and know they will return it in two to three years gives a crap about break-in?
Then answer me this ... How come a lot of manufacturers offer such solid warranties on "certified pre-owned" vehicles. What is the lessor (?) hadn't broken it in properly.
All goes to show, that I think with these modern car, the break-in is a bunch of B.S.
P.S. Damn, this thread is old.
