Yah, not being able to punp your own gas in Oregon scared the H*** out of my brother and I a few years ago while driving through Oregon en route to Washington. Neither of us had ever been to Oregon and had no clue about this law, and you have to understand that here in the L.A. area, gas-station attendants are usually safely tucked away inside of some sort of bulletproof booth or at the least behind a counter, and you *never* see them anywhere near the pumps. We stopped at some little gas station out in the boonies late at night. Before we know it, the scariest-looking gas station attendent you can imagine materializes right outside the window, and is just standing there staring at us. Man was that creepy...

I live in PA and make several trips to NJ. I hate filling up in NJ because I can't pump my own gas. It is a stupid, stupid, stupid law!!!! They will however let me full up my own motorcycle but they have to hand me the pump handle for some silly reason. I hate having them spill gas down the side of my tank!!!

So far I haven't had to fill up my MINI in NJ and I will avoid it as much as possible even though the gas is a little cheaper. NJ also has those stupid looking front license plates.
-Chris
p.s. I don't hate NJ, I actually like it, I just don't like their stupid laws.

The thing I'll never understand, in NJ the gas costs less than self-serve here in VA, yet they only have full serve. Seems to me that we are getting jacked on Self-Serve prices when it is apparent that full serve doesn't need to cost an arm and a leg more.

I must be living in a box. I had not heard of this law. Here in Kansas full service station are rare. I can remember as a child in the early 70's living in Lancaster PA, Mom would pull into the BP station, a man with a smile on his face would fill the tank, do the windows and check the oil. He would then give us a free drinking glass with smiley faces on it  . And I can remember everyone moaning when they couldn't get full service anymore. Boy have times changed. I would not like going to a full service station today. The trust just isn't there, to be comfortable knowing that the person is going to treat your car carefully. :???:

>>When in full service places, just get your lazy self out of the car and open it for them!

i have to agree, get out and pump it yourself
i get gas in NJ because it's cheaper and no way am i going to let the non-caring gas pump attendant ding up my car.....i can do that all by myself

Man.. I wish I could have this problem some days... Instead I get the pleasure of standing outside in a -10 wind chill... brrrr...

Good luck finding a Full Service place out here in WNY.. and if you do, expect to pay .25 to .50 a gallon more... (yikes..)

I'm living in that same box! My Dad would always get out of the car and meet the gas attendant. Dad would watch to make sure it was all done correctly. But my Mom would just say "Fill it up with Regular" and us kids would sometimes ask if we could tell them the order. It was fun to say "$3.00 of regular" or whatever ....

I can't believe there are places where you CAN'T pump your own gas. I think I'd do like Davbret and give a direct statement to the attendant. If you have to have him pump your gas then he has to follow your instructions or you'll go somewhere else. He is there to serve you!

Please do not tell the State of Texas about this law... We have some really odd laws down here and we don't need them encouraged to add another one!!
