You need to clean the dipstick (no laughing now). Put it back in (again no laughing) ... make sure the car is cold or rested a bit (NO LAUGHING!!!) ...

Pull the dip stick out and hold it up to the sun or a bright light ... You look for the reflection on the tip to see where its wet. It will look different ... OK you can laugh now

Step 1: Drain.
Step 2: Measure.
Step 3: Pour back in.

LMAO! Seriously though, the manual (pardon my cavalier use of the "m" word) says to check the oil after the engine has reached operating temperature and then only after it's been off for about 5 minutes.

Ben,
From the post details on the link I listed, if the filter was on "Simon" I'd get a replacement ASAP.
As far as filter changes between oil changes, I don't think you will lose much more oil than what's in the filter housing (about 1/2 quart tops I bet) since the filter is located so high on the crankcase.
I've used Mobil 1 from my first change at 2K (flushing out any possible break-in residue). I changed it at 2K, then it was changed by the dealer at about 12.5K. I'm going to change it every 10K miles, seems like a small price to pay for peace of mind.

I know this for a fact because we just did that.
I can confirm this cause I havent put on 15K miles on my cooper in 1 year yet but it was last April it had an oil chance and they called it "Low Milage" change and they also didnt resent my counter, they said just bring it in when it hits 0 or whatever its suppose to hit.

change your oil every 300 miles

new test confirms....change your oil every 300 miles.

Filter too.

If you actually drive your car, change your oil every 100 miles.

It is IMPORTANT.

Jiffy Lube and EXON stock holder sends....

Recently on the "Tech" segment of Motor Week on PBS, the garage guy talked about longer-lived synthetic oils, and about the various filters available. He stressed the importance of either getting a filter that is designed to last as long as the oil, or replacing it in between oil changes...
He advised, "Do your homework".

So, since I'll be changing the oil in about 600 miles at 17,500, I did some homework:
The BMW filters for the MINI that you get for cheap at the dealer, (mine just tossed me a couple when I stopped thru on a social visit, so I know they can't cost much ), are designed to last for the whole interval, if my technician can be believed.

I'm lucky to live sort of close to my dealer. I suppose if you are far away you could have some of the BMW filters shipped to your door? Don't forget to put loads of (new) oil on the new gasket when you're installing.

Did I mention that they also topped up my oil, gratis ?
