Smog warranty in Ca

Did a search and could not find it.

I thought I read somewhere on here the length of warranty on parts controlling the smog system on vehicles in CA or maybe it was in the entire U.S.

Does anyone know how long parts are warrantied by law? Also, does that include replacement factory parts? I looked through CA's state web site and could not find it there. A link would be greatly appreaciated.

Thanks in advance,

Earl

Earl,

I know that it is at least 5 years (until the first required smog check after purchase). I had something, can't remember what, go out on a Yukon a few years back. the dealer tried to charge me for it, but after I questioned it, they realized that it was smog equipment and was warranted for 5 years.

My manual (2003) says: CA Parts & Labor 3 yrs/ 50 k, Parts only 7 yrs/ 70k. Federal (rest of USA) Parts & Labor 2 yrs./ 24 k, Parts only 8 yrs./ 80 k. It said that CA cars may be eligible for the extra year of parts coverage under the Federal Law.

This seems a bit screwy that the emission warranty is less than the factory warranty (4 yrs/50K mi) on the rest of the car.

It is odd but probably the reason is that the emissions warranty terms are set by laws by the governments, the general vehicle warranty is set by the manufacturer and often varies by market. For example many general car warranties in Europe are only two years.

Doesn't seem too useful to have an emissions warranty that expires by the time the car gets its first smog inspection (4 years)...
