I'm swiching brands.

I have used Chevron 91 octane for all 38,000 miles in my car.

About a month or so back I started getting a little knocking and pinging when pulling any type of grade while under heavy acceleration. I just figured it was time for a Unichip and a good tune because of all of the mod's I have done.

Well, I was almost out of gas and didn't have a Chevron close. I had no other choice so I went to Exxon and filled up. Within two miles going up the hill to my house the knocking and pinging was gone . It was gone for the whole tank full. The next fill up I was back at Chevron. Within two miles the knocking was back . As soon as I could burn up that last tank full of Chevron I was back to Exxon.

Guess what? The knocking and pinging was gone again

I'm switching for good.

Are you sure its BP? A friend was there recently and told me the refilling guy had an Arco uniform on. I've heard that the supplier changes based upon lowest cost, so maybe its BP sometimes, Arco others and probably others too. Or maybe it varies by region?

Not doubting, just wondering.

Alot of times this can just be from seasonal blends, some cities/counties require specific blends in the summer to reduce smog, but once you're out of city limits you can get the good stuff. I've had problems with this before here in Jacksvonille with some older cars.

NEVER use Arco

I used to use Arco/BP/Costco (same brand) every time I filled my gas because they used to be the cheapest gas around.

There's a reason for that. They're not top tier because their gas is awful. I ran Arco gas for every tank for about 15,000 miles and my car started to surge and sputter (this was a Saab 9-3 turbo). It turns out the fuel was burning so dirty that my valves had been completely closed by grime from the fuel. I haven't used Arco since.

Arco and BP can claim that their refinement does the same job as cleaning agents, but it's total BS.

Just to reiterate, here is the list.

Top tier gas is recommended by BMW:

Quicktrip
Chevron/Texaco
ConocoPhillips
76
Shell
Entec Petroleum
Jiffy Mart
Mahalo
Trip-par Oil

Who would of thought JIFFY MART? Arco and Costco are not on the list. Isn't arco one of the biggest in California? I know it was when I lived in San Diego. Suprises me that there not on the list. <grin>

I hadn't realized Arco=BP, thanks for that. I've never had a car run right on Arco gas... I avoid them like the plague.
