I've just purchased a used '05 MCS. When I first turn the key to the second stop, some of the idiot lights come on in "test mode" but many stay dark. Should they all be illuminating??

Also, the gas cap warning light never comes one. Last night I unscrewed the cap and turned the car on, still no idiot light. Not that I really need it, I'm just curious.

I have a 2005 MCS - dont believe all lights should... (ie. cruise control, highbeams, ect... ) There is only a subset that comes on.

There is, btw, an actual test mode, and you can display and test all lights using this test mode. goto mini2.com and look at the FAQ/DIY section and I think it is test 19.

Not all the lights will show in the key-on 'test mode'. Some of the lights will not show unless the condition to light them is satisfied (boot/bonnet open, etc). As for the gas cap light, it takes time for a series of operations to occur before it's determined to be a fault. The leak detection pump has to be energized for a time, pressure must build and stay for a predetermined period. The LDP also does not run each time the car is started, especially if it was recently run.
