The Bambi Incident

I have a 05 covertible. Hit the deer at 9pm coming home from the gym. Crushed the front left but did not break glass (except the headlight)

The weird part was the mist that covered my windshield. Sweat from the deer at the time of impact. The smell was intense. The next day at the body shop when we popped the hood to inspect, the smell was over everything.

Took 2 1/2 weeks to get the car back. The wait was long but pleased the repair went well and car seems as good as new for now.

So what's the bottom line gang? Does this Hornet thing work? I almost nailed two deer in November and I swear they leapt over the hood of the MINI. Yeah, I admit it, I was scared. I have seen the carnage caused by a vehicle and deer collision on the freeway and my wife has nailed one in her 4Runner on a side road with amazing damage to her vehicle.

So, I'm not wanting any marketing schmooz now, just step up here and say this thing works and I'm buying two tonight!

...Les

That's true... there is no way to prove or disprove their effectiveness. For obvious reasons, motorcyclists are very concerned with deer... this is just one recent thread on the deer whistles... they pretty much all go the same way CLICKY. (BTW, I wasn't the one that hit the deer in that post).

I would be ticked if I hit a deer too. Glad you are OK.

At the risk of being called a BAMBI-lover (which probably fits) please remember that the deers' natural living space is dissappearing, thanks to us

A few years ago, my dad hit a deer while driving a company fleet car--also in western PA. The car was equipped with deer whistles (the non-electric kind you stick on the bumper).

I guess it was a grazing blow (to a grazing doe?), because the only damage to the car was that the deer whistle was knocked off.

Welllllll...... I wouldn't say that CLICKY

What we've been very sucessful at, however, is eliminating the deer's natural predators .

I'm not sure which one they're referring to but I'm pretty sure the passive air whistles have been proven not to be of much use. The XP3 that I use is a powered unit and I haven't seen evidence that they don't work...yet...

Perhaps you missed one of the referenced links from that thread which I'll repost HERE. The ibmwr.org site is one of the most respected motorcycle sites on the internet and they do make specific mention of the "electronic... ultrasonic... Hornet" whistles with many Government, University and other professional references to back it up. Sure, this is the internet and that article could pure B/S too....

I guess the bottom line is, if you believe it does work.... then that's all that ultimately matters. This is simply one of those things that you could never prove either way.

BTW, I just made the connection with your name..... I think you've got just about the best looking Mini I've seen yet. If you haven't been hit by deer yet, it's not cuz you have a Hornet... it cuz those dumb ***** at least seem to have some sense of "Art."

[QUOTE=snapper]Stupid fooking forest kamikazes.... hate 'em more than anything in the world. #1 reason I'm buying a Mini right now is cuz of them..... and I'm installing a cow catcher.

I agree! These are the dumbest animals ever put on earth. Just look at their tiny little heads. Can't be any kind of a brain in there. I think the species should be completely eradicated. Poisened, maybe even trapped and then tortured to death.

My wife & I have had 6 collisions with the worlds' stupidest animals. 3 collisions reguired extensive repair, 1 moderate repair work and 2 collisions I just half-*** fixed myself.

Now dig this!!! 3 out-of 6 of these collisions! THEY HIT US!!! That's right! It's like they are holding union meetings and rallying their troops to "get even" with these lazy mechanized humans.

The last one, about 2 months ago, I braked to avoid hitting one in front of me, and while I was still stopped a second one came out the woods pulling a rocket-trail behind him. BAM! Right into the passenger door of my truck. Then it gets up and walks across the road.

I can't even imagine hitting one these ******* or bastards with my MINI. OH my gorgeuos clamshell hood! I would have to take up hunting...Deer hunting!

DPCooperS - I feel your pain. I hit a deer on Rt 8 just south of Butler a few years ago in my first MINI. (After I hit it, some lady in an SUV behind me drove over it!)

Anyhow, MOP did a good job overall - Hopefully I won't have any occasion to, but I'd most likely take this MINI to them if it needed body work. Only one thing I wasn't happy about was they apparently hadn't taken appropriate precaution with the glass - when I got tinting done afterwards, there were some metal chips melted into the inside of the hatch window. I would probably have never known without the tinting which looked like it had little bubbles in it.

PS. The PittStop MINI Club has an autocross planned for May 20 at North Park (by invitation of the North Hills SCCA). ...We also have the "Triple Track Event" this coming Sunday at BeaveRun which includes an AutoX and the go-kart track (in your MINI!) - but it doesn't appear that your car will be ready by then. If you have other wheels to drive, you're welcome to come to the event anyhow.

I hear ya.... 3 hits on a motorcyle, 2 more hits in my car. 2 of the motorcycle strikes were from the side into my rear quarter, one car strike was into my passenger door .

You'll appreciate this deer strike... read post 30 to 33 .

Oh yeah... and you think you Mini owners have an issue with deer? Take a look what us motorcyclist are up against HERE....
