Whistling brake

Has anyone else noticed when coming to the end of a stop and you're lightly braking... have you heard a slight whistling sound. I really don't think it's the "brake dust" phenomenon as the service guy at Prestige MINI told me.... I can make it happen with just the right amount of brake pressure - and it's LIGHT pressure too...

Just thought I'd pose this Q. Not worried about the sound but it does bug me. Thanks!

Mine has it too. If I release and re-apply, sometimes it goes away.

Mine has the same problem too
well i wouldn't really call it a problem
but it gets annoying from time to time espeically when you are in a parking lot with nice cars parked

It makes the Mini look old and rusty.

yup, add me to the list. I kept bugging Tuls because I thought I needed new brakes...he finally took a look and they're fine. it is irritating to pull up next to poeple squeaking but I don't think there's much you can do other than maybe buy different pads.

Yup, I have it here too. Guess it's another one of those "eccentricites"...

Not Acceptable

I've been having the same issue. Forgot to mention it at my 10k check-up, but it is on the top of my list for the 20k check-up next month.

Are we seriously expected to just accept squeaky brakes? Not this kid!

MINI's are about performance and quality. (Besides incredibly great looks)

My service advisor will meet his worst nightmare if they think I'm going to accept squeaky brakes.

How may of our fellow motorers have gotten a successful resolution from MINI? Please share.

Motor on.

Thanks for your input, guys; glad to hear I'm not alone. It did go away briefly, yesterday, after power washing my S (in the 20 degree weather) but then reared its sneaky head not too long after everything down there dried out. Or froze solid, lol.

Brakes????? Never had the problem but then again, I don't use them much. Twist, turn, upshift, downshift, go man go! Is that that third pedal in the middle? Brakes, hmphhh. Try using them less. I guarantee you'll get less squeal.

I also got the brake dust answer from my dealer. They deglazed the rotors and it went away for a while, but it's back.
I agree with jimmy_racoon, this is not acceptable on a new car.
Speaking of brake dust, I have never seen such a prodigious supply of dust on any vehicle! Thinking about switching to a low-dust pad.

Same issue here and funny enough, I did not notice it until 2k miles... must be something in it - maybe print this thread out and take it to your dealership...

i also have this problem, but to a much worse degree. Its a really loud screech from the rear brakes....i'm taking it in for the second time, on thursday morning, and i'll be damned if they think i'm gonna put up with them anymore. I've flushed out the brake dust so many times with a high pressure hose countless times, does nothing. My car has only done 10500 km, and it started about a month or so ago, and its pretty bad. i'm thinking it might be some water in the brake fluid, but i'll keep you posted as to what the service ppl say

-Edit: i have also stamped on the brakes about five times from various speeds to try and fix the prob, nothin doin...

Yeah, I'm one of those people who tries to brake as little as humanly possible. It's tough in metro NY though. It's amazing how many people I'll see on an INTERSTATE highway that will apply their brakes when there's no one or nothing in front of them. Paranoia big destroya!

Mine squeak. I called the service guy and he told me that it is normal. I guess his wife has a MINI and he told me he takes it from her once a month or so and "gets on the brakes" and the squeaks go away.

It seems worse whe it is cold (20 degrees F of so). So now I have the Web-Spoke click in summer and the squeak in winter.

Haha, I see none of you have driven with aftermarket Brembo pads? They make your car sound like a train comming to a stop.

I've heard that the pads BMW uses are really dusty and squeeky though.
