Assuming it's a decent watch, I'd take the watch.

Be aware that Rolex is one of the exceptions to watches that you can wear daily and sell for, at the minimum, the same amount you purchased it for.

I wear an Omega Seamaster M Diver daily (the "Bond watch"), and love it but wouldn't expect to get back what I paid for it if I were to sell it.

Just a note so that you don't assume something like a Movado or Tag will surely return as an investment.

Yeah, I guess there's a pretty big sentimental difference between a $5k watch and a $500 watch. I suppose that's one of the reasons I wasn't really too sure. We're just not at a point yet that we can get away with spending X thousands on a watch. Saving for the wedding makes it pretty difficult.

I dont think anyone should buy a watch as an investment. However, you can pretty much take it to the bank that a Rolex is "meant" to be worn everyday AND will be worth MORE than what you paid for it (unless you get it from "rolexes R'Us" on the street

I agree with you on the investment part, in my opinion you should buy watch(es) that you love and love to wear, but to each their own!

While this holds true for many Rolexes, the market for an explorer or even a GMT often isn't nearly as good as it is for a Sub, Yachtmaster or of course a Daytona.

Well, how about another option. Go out and have a nice dinner and enjoy being with each other and forget the gifts. Which would be more meaningful...stuff for your car that you may sell or wreck, some watch that you may lose or get tired of or whatever, or being able to comfortably afford the wedding that you both dream of? Just a thought

Ohh. That's a Mars/Venus thing. As a guy, I would say elope and go REALLY cheap on wedding and honeymoon. Use the extra money for a down payment on a house (or a Ferrari).

I know already the reaction to this but to be honest, after X number of years, your probably not going to remember one thing about your wedding (YES ... I know the flames are coming). But, to be honest ... I couldn't place ONE name of a person at my reception or whatever after many years but SURE do wish I had that money to buy a house all those years ago. ...

Don't hit me too hard, I'm just a dumb "guy".

Totally with you on this, but if it makes the missus happy, I'll do it.

I am in on making sure she is happy. If she wants the fancy wedding enjoy it with her.

As for the car parts or watch. Since the two of you enjoy taking the mini out together I would go with car parts. You are more likely to create enjoyable memories on a road trip together than by looking at a watch together.

Motor on!

I'm not a big wedding person either. Shoot, we got married in a janitor's closet at the county courthouse We had made an appt. with the judge and someone was using his chambers and we needed witnesses, so he pulled us into the nearby janitor's office/closet and the 2 75+ year old janitors were our witnesses. Whenever folks are talking about their 'different' weddings, I usually win

I vote for the house downpayment, but if you guys are saving for a wedding, that usually means that there is definitely going to be a decent sized wedding - well at least decent sized compared to mine

We're planning on 250-300, mostly her family that she never sees. It's silly, but it's tradition. We were originally going to just have the reception at a cheap Chinese restaurant, and get by that way, but 30-40 are going to be my co-workers and I'm kind of embarassed and if anybody has seen my previous posts, you should understand, plus she wants the pretty reception also so we're going a bit more upscale with 250-300...

after getting many aftermarket parts from my wife over the years, the
worst presents are the ones that wear out or have to sell off down the
road. I buy cars every year and every time i have to let the present go
it made me a little sad. i mean, these are car parts that would make
no sense in keeping if i sold the car.

so, i recommend you ask for tools or something that will be part of
your garage for a very long time if you're going to ask for something
relating to cars. each time you use it, you'll remember the time
she gave it to you.

We actually intend on keeping the MINI forever. It's our first car together and the first car I bought with my own money from my very first job. Lots of firsts and it's lots of fun... Hopefully, nothing bad ever happens to Morgan.

Since we're on the topic of anniversary presents, what should I get her? I'm thinking necklace, watch or purse. It also happens that her old watch that I got her for b-day is breaking. What do you guys think?

jewelry, not a purse.

get her something that won't go out of style, a nice watch that's not in some super trendy 'here today gone tomorrow' style can do this, or of course a necklace.

purse trends change quarterly, I'd want the gift to mean something more than something she probably won't use 1-2 years from now

Good idea there Ken! I know that people like to believe that they will keep a car forever, but the reality of it is that a good torque wrench will be with you alot longer than any car

As for stuff for her...hmmm...I dunno, I'm a woman that gets car parts for Christmas

Okay, so I've selected some necklaces from Tiffany's that I haven't decided on. I'm trying to take a look at watches. Can anybody point me to a good website for watches? or brands that are around or less than $500?

Don't forget that there are used Rolexes out there... A stainless steel model won't break the bank as bad as you might think, and it will last forever. Before you splurge on a fine watch for her, make sure she is a "watch" person. A lot of men are, but women don't typically get as excited over high end watches as men do. If she tosses it in a drawer with 10 or 15 cheapie watches, it's purpose is kinda defeated.

Another unique gift, for the right type of person of course, is a nice gun. Shooting clay targets is about as addictive a thing as humankind has ever discovered, and sharing those experiences with your GF/wife would be fantastic. As a matter of fact, some of the people who seem happiest are the couples who come to our club on a regular basis. I know one couple (in their 50's) that are still like two teenagers in love and absolutely LOVE shooting, hunting, and fishing together. They are in the process of building a "farm" with a pond for fishing and about 100 acres planted with crops designed to ensure great quail hunting. She is more excited about it than he is! Every time I see them, she whips out drawings of the fields, ponds, etc. They travel all over the US and also do some overseas travel to pursue the "sporting life".

Find SOMETHING active to do together, and try to buy her something really nice to use in that pursuit. Those were some examples that I've seen that have worked well for other couples...I mean well, I just don't know y'all that well!

Would this be a nice watch for a girl? I don't really know as I'm not a girl. If this isn't a good choice, I'm going with Tiffany's jewelry. Then you guys will get a chance to vote on that. I'm beginning to think that I should probably do my own selecting.
