R50/53 Cracked Windshield Line up...How many?
Holdenontoit........ if I remember correctly, you need another 2 replacements to crack (har har) the current record held by DaveinDenver. 5. Let us hope you never get there
(and I still think that MINIUSA should pay for a free PPG--or other aftermarket--replacement if it is determined that crappy glass, and not simply body flex, are responsible)

>>when I had the bloody windscreen replaced they did so with PPG glass. The other day, travelling down the highway, I was smashed by what must have been a child-sized rock. NO CHIP/CRACK/POCK/DING ETC!!!!! It survived!
Cool. They put PPG glass in mine too.
Two birds have run into it since I got it replaced. Not one bird prior to the PPG. I think birds are attracted to it!

I got my mine fixed last week. I had a lower divers side stress facture. They relaced it with factory glass no questions asked. They even washed the car. I had over a months worth of road crud build up and my wheels where BLACK. I wish I had known to ask for the PPG glass. I guess if it happens again I'll ask for the glass upgrade.

I got a dime-sized "star burst" crack in the middle driver's side portion of the window about a month after delivery! A rock was kicked up by a tractor trailer truck on I-276 in PA. Smacked into the windshield at around 70 MPH. Direct Hit!
I called a company called SafeLite (they're on the Internet) glass repair, and they sent a repair person out to where I work, and repaired it with resin and cured it with ultraviolet light (not a cigarette lighter!!!). It costs about $60 or you can opt to have your insurance pay for it.
The result: the star burst is completely gone. They use a portable vacuum system to literally pump out the air in the starburst portion of the crack, then they inject "resin" into the main 'hole' of the crack and cure it with a portable light.
But there is still a small 1/16" noticeable spot in what used to be the center of impact, because the resin is not a 100% match with the clarity of the glass...close, but no cigar. Only I know it's there...most people don't notice it or think it's just a small bug splat
Anyway, after a 1000 mile highway trip, I now have about a half dozen miniscule chips in the windshield...not cracks, but tiny tiny tiny chips in the top-most layer of glass. Sucks but what are you gonna do? Gotta Motor On. I figure in a couple years, if I feel like it and if the chips are worse or bothering me, I can always get an aftermarket (STRONGER!) windshield installed.
I heard MINI dealers charge anywhere from $800 to $1,100 for a windshield replacement. That's INSANE. Can anyone verify this price?

Paid $931 yesterday @ Crevier MINI in SoCal. Today new chip/crack This is getting old. Yes They charge too much I dont know what the other dealers charge for labor, Crevier is $105 pr hr At 5.4 set rate for removal install.
Yikes! 5.4 hours to remove and install a windshield? Do they work in slow-motion? Or is the MINI windshield supremely difficult to get at? Just sounds like way too long.
Maybe they take 1 hour to remove the old windshield and install the new one, and another 4.4 hours to watch the sealant dry?
Until today I had two rock damage incidents...from my April post:
>>#1 - Rock damage - I ignored it & it turned into a creeping crack - windshield replaced.
>>
>>#2 - Rock damage - repaired at glass shop 10 minutes later.
Today I have a new crack with zero evidence of rock damage. It started at the bottom edge under the seal and it's crept about 6" so far. Looks like a stress fracture to me.
I'm sure it's complete coincidence, but..... I've had a Helix strut brace on since almost day one and not a single stress fracture, but I took the brace off yesterday and it cracked today. Like I said, probably just a coincidence.....right?

Just joined this site to check about the windsheild problems. I have an early production 2002 Cooper S. Found my first windsheild stress fracture a few weeks after I got the car. Only found it during my first car wash since it was hidden upper passenger side over the black rim. Dealer replaced it under warranty. 2 years later and several chips...A big crack lower passenger side, think it stemmed from a very very small chip. Will have to take it in to see if dealer will replace it. Never heard of PPG glass so I will look around for that if dealer won't fix under warranty. thanks for all the info!
Sorry DiD,# 6 (first of the supposed new windshields)broken.I've already posted this, but thought I might as well add the news to this thread for posterity.Dugmar also on his sixth. Can it get any better than this..................Peace.
Had my first rock chip within about a week of buying the car. Had that repaired.
This morning, I finally noticed the dreaded stress crack coming down behind the mirror - after about 29K miles. Princeton agreed that it was a stress fracture and will replace it under warranty. Hopefully, I'll get some of that new PPG glass wich is apparently resistant to boulders!

Just checked on this windshield thing. My insurance covers repairs of nicks and small cracks so I haven't had a problem, until now.
One crack that was repaired RAN. This is not supposed to happen
. The epoxy they use is supposed to be very strong. I thought I remembered hearing about problems with WS and checked this thread out.
Now I don't know if I shoud call the dealer or the guy who repaired the crack?

i found that if i stay at least 4 and up to 6 car lengths that i have significantly cut down on stone impacts! ( pretty much have eliminated them) hope this helps.....or go riding on a motorcycle 4 lengths or closer to get a feel for the sandblasting yer front end takes!
