R50/53 Checking software version?

I've searched around and cannot find an answer to this simple question.

Is there any way to tell what software version is running inside the mini computer?

No, not by any known means not involving a dealer interface computer. There is not way to access software version info just by pressing a button in the dashboard.

if you have the GPS there is...

you go to the "settings" screen and it's in the top right corner i believe...

No that's the Nav system software, not the engine computer software. Two totally different beasts...
