R50/53 CVT Transmision Flush
As mentioned in the December 30,2002 edition of AutoWeek...
"CVT MInis built between August and October 2002 were filled with the wrong
transmision fluid, which could cause the trans clutch to slip."
I contacted Ralph Schomp, the Denver dealer, and they want me to bring DBCoopr
in for a free flush and new , proper, fluid...gratis
My question is, why did i have to read this in a magazine? Why didn't Mini USA contact us ?
Has anyone else heard this?

Are you sure your car is in the affected lot? I know some people did get notifications, but ingeneral, it seems that comunication between MINIUSA, the dealers, and the customers is pretty poor, and varies greatly from place to place. Not sure why, seems like if we "amateurs" can keep a good line of communication and information flowing reliably and quickly, the professionals ought to be able to do it much better, but that doesn't seem to be the case...

And DB, the message to MINI dealers (from BMW) indicating this campaign was in the works said that the dealers were supposed to be extra nice to the customers while the rather lengthy service was being performed. So, be sure to eat your fair share of donuts...and maybe even ask them for a loaner if you need it.

Ahem...Before making the trip down to the dealership, give MINIUSA a holler (1-866-ASK-MINI) and ask to be conected with SAM at MINI customer service. Give him the last seven digits of your VIN serial number and he will be able to tell your right away if your Cooper CVT falls within the scope of the recalled cars or not.
MINIUSA did sent out recall notifications in the mail ONLY to those owners with affected CVT units (Wrong low viscosity oil from factory). If you did not receive one, it is very likely that your car is not affected by the recall.
My early August build 2002 Cooper CVT was not affected by said recall. I did not receive a notification from MINIUSA either, but Sam was able to double check and confirm that my car does not need the transmission oil flush per the recall notice.
The recall mostly affects cars built between late August 2002 (Last week or so) until Ocotober 2002. The majority of the affected cars are 2003 model year CVT's built beginning September 2002.
I don't recommend getting a tranny oil flush just for the heck of it. If it ain't broken why fix it?
Make the call. Maybe you can save yourself from a wasted trip to the dealer.

Don't bother asking for Sam today though (1/16), he's out sick =( I'd imagine any of the other reps should be able to give you the same information, though.
