Carlossal
Big is beautiful ... the 1,000bhp Cadillac
SIZE still matters in the United States.

Despite the Mini’s surprise win as 2003 North American Car Of The Year, the Detroit show is a tribute to maximum motoring excess.

But the Yanks are not the only ones who build monster machines — Britain and Germany have their own heavyweights too.

An elegant but huge new Rolls-Royce, a big brawny Bentley and the 20ft Mercedes Maybach are all major contenders for the super-heavyweight crown.

But the winner for sheer motoring muscle has to go to a concept model from the world’s biggest car firm, General Motors.

GM’s Cadillac Sixteen looks like a sophisticated Batmobile and is a reminder of America’s glamour cars of the Thirties and Fifties.

Sweet sixteen ... the Aston Martin AMV8 wowed the motor show

If Ben Hur was around today, he’d swop his chariot for this.

It has the mother of all engines — a 13.6-litre V16 giving 1,000bhp and an incredible fuel economy figure of 20mpg.

Travelling inside the Cadillac is like flying first class, with hand-stitched Tuscany leather seats, reclining back seats and every luxury gizmo you could ever want.

GM boss Rick Wagoner says no decision has been made about whether the Sixteen will go into production but the car does give an idea of what Cadillac’s flagship of the future could look like.

Another star of the North American International Auto Show is the new jumbo-sized Rolls-Royce Phantom built in West Sussex. The Americans loved it.

Monster motor ... the 20ft Mercedes Maybach is a real heavyweight

Ford are relying on a giant new pick-up — the replacement for their hugely successful F150 truck — to compete with the big boys. The F150 is the best-selling vehicle in the world, with almost a million sold each year.

The firm’s latest model takes the pick-up truck into a stylish new level of sophistication.
