Relax Eric, don't take life sooo seriously
The sad truth is that most Americans are not very well versed in Geography (That Jay Walk segment is a small example) because our culture and education (At least in recent times) does not promote a "Global" view and the keen desire to learn about other cultures, peoples and languages. Maybe a contributing factor is our sort of geographical isolation, our belief that we are the "best and only ones that know how to do things right" and also in part xenophobia and ignorance about inhabitants from elsewhere around the world. I don't see the great majority of Americans "Dying" to learn a foreign language be it French, Spanish, German or whatever. I am not generalizing to 100% but the trend unfortunately is there.
OK enough of thread hijacking!

To throw my two cents in on this:
Oil companies are in the business of selling oil. Therefore they want you to change your oil often.
Auto manufacturers are in the business of selling vehicles. Therefore it is a good thing to have them wear out after the warranty is up.
I feel that it is a waste of money and oil to change at 3 or 5k especially when even the oil companies are saying their synthetic oils are good for 10 to 15,000 miles. Personally I have chosen to change oil around 10k.
As it was mentioned if you followed the manufacturers recommended intervals and had the proper documentation then you should not fear. Here in the US any over blown claims would make it open season on those making the claims.
Cheers,
Jack

I couldn't find anywhere in the manual where it said to check oil regularly.
And there was like 600miles left to the next service.
Also, to the person who posted about the oilservicecounter, why does it say in the manual that it changes depending on how you drive.

My comments about MINI's advertised 15K intervals aren't the point. The point is universal: manufacturers want us to believe their cars are bullet-proof.
And, xsmini, I know that's the way TPMS is supposed to work, but it just doesn't seem to hold true. If my car detects an overall change in tire-speed, it gives me that horrible ding. Which raises a question: if turning can be described as "one side moving faster than the other", then why doesn't the TPMS light come on every time you turn the car? There is a difference in wheel-rotation speed, after all...

I'll never wait more than 10K miles again, and probably not much past 6K, but I do not check my oil on a regular basis. I'm a bad man.

Oops! I mis-read your question. I've never seen even one MINI that had a variable count-down. It's a steady count-down from 15K, although my MA said that it was variable. There is documentation out there (I can't find it, so don't take my word for it) that confirms the 25 mile countdown, just as there is information to confirm that the red-line is not variable, as many people believe.

My wife is Norwegian so I know plenty about Scandinavia, that is, I know a lot of Swedish jokes.
Does that count as cultural education?

I see that you have mastered the art of thread hijacking as well!
In regards to oil, I previously checked mine about once every 3-4 months. Not often enough I know, but everytime it was rock solid midway on the hash.
As time goes on, I check it less frequently. I know this is contrary to what I am supposed to do.
BTW I do a lot of highway driving approx. 30 miles (4.8 NORWEGIAN miles) each way to work. I get on it when I get off the freeway (I like to "jackrabbit" as my friend puts it, a lot of hard acceleration and stopping).

I just checked mine (after 6K miles - time to change soon), and the stick reads "Max", and the color is a medium-dark brown. Time to buy some oil.
fj0, I really feel for you. Best of luck resolving this horrible situation. Watch it turn out that they left the drain-plug out, or some other such sillyness.
