VR6 might have the MCS on a drag strip, but if there is a turn it will get its hiney handed to it. Way too much weight up front for any handling. I have driven one and it has major understeer and the limit is way too low for a car with that much power. In the end the VR6 is fast but dangerous because it can fly, but it does not handle very well at high speeds. If you were going to stay on interstates a VR6 would be sweet, but if you like twisty roads stay away from it.

The stock VW GTI with the 200hp VR6 engine is a great, but I highly doubt your friend would "woop" you. Simply point out to him how heavy the VW is--how that 200hp must move more weight.

It all comes down to how many pounds each horse has to move. I suspect that the two cars are very close, and perhaps the MINI even has an advantage... Not to mention that VW's suspensions are always softer than a MINI's. Go around any tight corner in a VW, even with their optional "sport suspension" and you'll notice lots of body roll. The same corner in a MINI, and you're firmly planted, go-kart stable. I know, I've had both a Golf and a GTI, in addition to my MCS.

I think your friend would be quite surprised how well your MINI would stack up against a GTI.

Stock VR6 and MCS

.. are neck and neck on acceleration. No comparison on handling. R32 and MCS on handling - on par.. MCS quicker through the cones.. but the R32 has tons of torque, all wheel drive and TREMENDOUS Konig seats!

Did they only make them in that blue? Or do I just notice those because there are no plain old Golfs in that color (a la Viggen)?

Until VW fixes their quality control blunders, I will never buy one again....yes, the R32 is a badass machine, but not worth the money or the headache of part quality, and fitiment issues. I've owned two VW's in the past 5 years (Jetta and Beetle), both were trim and mechanical nightmares.

Thanks for the info. My buddy keeps egging me on that he'll whoop my MCS with his VR6 he is getting....He doesn't even have it yet and I tell him let's see what happens when he actually gets it!

In a VR6? Hmmmm....they weigh quite a bit too.

So what kind of wheels does he have now? NIke? Adias?

I'm not sure how heavy a VR6 is, but my MCSc is about 2800 lbs.
Right now he has a mildly modded Civic EX. and a pair of Nikes

R32 seats are absolutely amazing...interior is nice as well. I did look at them last year...

Remember - there is drive line HP loss due to the AWD....

Im sure this has been mentioned before, but this needs repeating. The R32, while fast, is nowhere near as fun as the Coper. Ive drivin my friends R32, and i loved the power, but dont ask me to buy one. Its just not worth it to me. Also, the car is technilogically unstable. Minor parts constantly break. If you get the car, make sure you get the longest waranty possible.

So how does his sneakers, I mean, civic, match up against your MCSC?

vw vs mini

A quick check at an unofficial site: Jetta=2853 lbs# GTI=2723 lbs

How I ended up in a MINI by Hugh

My 99 Jetta VR6 which I bought new in 99 was a hoot to drive. But that's the only good thing I can say. I will not go through the list of problems, mechanical and trim falling apart. Goto sites like Edmunds, My lemon vw, and VW Sucks. After all, this is a MINI forum. All I can say is I share the same views as poster Dave above.

My perceived difference betwee Mini and VW is yes, Mini had some teething problems, but to my knowledge, since 2002, they have resloved them to almost everybody's sastisfaction.

VOA, on the other hand has not. Upset owners were writing about the same defects, problems with the dealers, and the home office(Volkswagon of America) on 02s 03s and 04s as they were on the 99s 01s and 02s. In other words, VW had just not cleaned up its act.

So as much as I wanted to come back and buy a brand new leftover 04 GTI vr6 at over $4000 below sticker this past January, I had lost confidence in the product. The fact that there were that many leftovers available at similar pricing spoke volumes.

So I started test driving Acuras, Mazda 3, Mazda 6, Hondas, and of course an MCS. Nothing from Japan compared to what I felt when I hammered the Mini !!! I was hooked !!! The rest is history.

I'll be curious to hear about the Jetta 05, with it's 150 hp. In the meantime, no regets.
Here's me in my blk/blk MCS

It doesn't but he's so enthusiastic about getting the VW and he knows how much fun I've had in the Mini. So he is stuck on the idea that when he gets the VR6 that we'll go do some driving and he'll whoop on me. I told him we'll find out when he does get his VW, but I told him I didn't think he wouldn't be able to whoop me!

Not true. They sold well (and at MSRP or above) when new last year, but you can find a few leftovers on lots now. I passed a dealer a few days ago with a couple.
