Some nice responses, but come on! He admittedly has practically NO driving experience and admits to exceeding 100MPH on public roads. And further, he doesn't understand why some folks are peeved at his "confession" here.

Totally irresponsible. Any such driver is a menace, and a fatal accident waiting for a place to happen. He's really lucky that we can't see his identity here, I'd inform his parents immediately.

Also, I can't imagine not being totally aware of speed. If a driver is unaware of actual speed (e.g., within 10% of the actual speed, approximately), that would be the definition of "out of control". Considering how large the speedometer in the MINI is, that's a serious lapse of concentration! Very dangerous.

Sure, these cars are fun to drive but that is no license to drive irresponsibly.

I'm just glad he doesn't live in my area . . .

Sorry, but I don't condone such dangerous, infantile and reckless behavior. It's a crying shame that the police didn't cite him and suspend his license.

I still dont understand what hes trying to say. I dont understand if he says he screams his tires to much, or if he is just driving to fast, commuting to fast, or not paying attention. The whole thing started with feeling guilty.

The only way I could relate, was when I just got mine, I would never try to keep it in the rain, wash it 3-4Xs per week, and wonder if spirited driving was bad for the car. (got over all the quick.)

That's all there is to it. Even though I paid for my MINI myself, my parents don't want high insurance rates because of me. So they have made it perfectly clear on the consequences of driving aggressively. They are fairly well known and thats the last thing they need is if they go to a dinner party and someone says, yea I know you your son's a jackass. My opinion is if you want to go fast, do it on a closed track or airport runway, not on the street where you are endangering others lives. My moto is that I always will go the speed limit or slightly (5 mph MAX) over it that's all, but I'll have the time of my life getting to it.

I am back but only because I wan't to clarify my situation with exactly what happend. Here's the Situation:
Was cruising at 70 mph, in a 65, people passing me going at least 90+ (Indiana Toll Road, crazytown.). This was until about 10 secs later the fastest I had ever taken my car. I generally do not go over 5 mph above the speed limit. I was coming up on a semi and no where to go except into the left lane where I had to accelerate fast to avoid getting rear ended by Mario Andretti. I accelerated, got to the cab of the semi looked down and said, oh crap 101, I'm slowing down now, got into the other lane and set the cruise control to 66mph for the rest of the way to the exit. Conditions were perfect, traveling east close to sunset, roads were dry, everything was fine. I just went way too fast and should have just passed when I was comfortable. But i didn't, I made a mistake, just like every human being makes.

As to abusing my MINI, I, like my qoute, was just accelerating to hard to the speed limit. 5000 rpm + shifts, I just need to find how to take it a little easier. I plan on never going that fast ever again, it scared the crap out of me because I thought I was going at max 85, I just wanted to get passed that semi and into a clear lane where I would set my cc and obey traffic laws.

Peace

Mike

I do not see anyone being mean to you here on this thread. Maybe as a veteran of MMORPGs, i have seen far nastier said and therefore I just have more of a tolerance for things that aren't composed of all happy face smilies.

But really, you post that you're a MINI abuser on an enthusiast board and you expect everyone to be all peachy keen about it? It is up to you how to drive, you're certainly old enough to make your own decisions, and old enough to know the consequences.

Mike...oh if that's what happened then welcome to the club. I think that happens to everyone at some point, especially when your primary focus is passing safely w/ other cars zooming about. Thing is...you corrected. That's good.

You know, with an MCS and all...........a lot of our local owners just LOVE going to a nearby perforance driving school...kinda just for fun...but also for learning more about the drivability of their MINIs. Everyone I know who has gone (young and old) just rave about how much they learned about safe MINI motoring!!! You might enjoy something like that once you feel you're ready. It could help you feel more confident overall w/ such a potent machine.

Oh yes, it is very easy to speed in the MCS. I have looked down to realize I'm going 90+ after passing people. I even let a state trooper test drive my car and he commented on how quickly it accelerated to the speed limit without feeling like we were going fast. But then again, you know they drive Ford Crown Victorias or Chevy Impalas.

If you go back and read your thread it almost seems like you have an inner struggle to drive safe at a young driving age. For those of us that have driven for a while and and have pushed the MINI to the edge (on the track) know it is a beast. In the hands of a newbie can be unsafe if not treated with respect. Now that you give us a better recap of your story we understand you better. Just drive safe.

I have a buddy here at work who just bought his son....a new driver...an '05 PW/PW MCS. He was initially going to get him a Cooper, but the kid wanted an S. My friend caved. He asked me, "Do you think I went overboard?? I said, "Yes, I think you're nuts." He knew I was kidding...the deed was done...but I do really question the wisdom of putting a new driver behind the wheel of an MCS. An '05 MCS is a stick of freakin' dynamite!!!!! Anyway, his son is being careful with his new car and so is ChiliCooperS. Good enough...we wish them well.

Interesting to read accounts in GoMINI of youngsters who MUST drive a MINI One because of their age (which simply equates to the need for experience) presumably for insurance purposes. So they drive a One...chip it if they want, or get some bling bling wheels. I wouldn't blame anyone who advocated similar restrictions here.

If you are always running late, maybe you should try and manage your time better and leave a few minutes earlier. If you drive around like a maniac all the time (and the police DO look for the knucklehead slicing and dicing his or her way thru traffic) you will accumulate so many points that the only time you'll spend with your MINI is to wash it.

And then we'll be reading your posts on northamericanpedaling.com

Slow Down...you can't afford the insurance at the very least

Dude,

Take a professional (performance?)driving course. It will be the best investment you'll ever make. Sooner or later you'll get into a situation where the skills you learn in a course like that will save your hide and the something or someone that you will be trying to avoid. Everyone that has posted here want you to live a long MINI love of life. Being young was fun and a bit crazy, be careful. Besides, if you take a professional (performance) driving course you'll discover the fun and responsibility of driving crazy fast at sanctioned events at tracks. Join a MINI club while you're at it.

On I-459, to bikers got caught doing 167, and 165 (respectively) and I heard they were looking at two months!

P.S. Hey lot15, you deseverve some cake..

Ya know I was motoring about last night and I realized something that ChiliCooperS alluded to and it got me thinking. It also accounts for a recent "police encounter" I was in recently. That is the problem of being in the blind spot of a much larger vehicle (in his case and mine a truck) and how unsafe a situation I percieve that to be, especially having driven small cars most of my life. The problem, of course, is that I don't know if they can see me, and should they change lanes suddenly....well let's just say I'm not going to stay in that high-risk situation.

So this happened to me last night w/ a big 'ol SUV. I couldn't slow down...cars behind me. My only recourse was to blip the throttle and, not pass, but just get out of that blind spot and then return to posted speeds. In spite of all the logical and systematic analyses of traffic protocols out there, stuff just happens that is unforseen and one has to weigh the realtive safety of these kind of weird situations.

So ChiliCooperS probably did the right thing. (You know, Mike, this thread ceased to be about you long ago, buddy. It's more about the general relationship between roadway safety in general and cars capable of compromising the same!) I know for me...I will not stay in someone's blind spot...period. So it seems ChiliCooperS hit the throttle because he was in a similar high-risk situation. The only thing that caught him off guard was that his MCS was far more willing to comply (and quite capable of doing so) than he imagined. Seems fair enough....same thing happened to me on a recent test drive.

The dreaded blind spot.During the day not much you can do but get out of it as fast as you can.But at night I always flash my highbeams when passing big rigs to let them know I'm coming by them.Day or night I always flash them if they are passing me to let them know they are clear, they always flash the 4 ways in thanks.

Good one Lot. I've been flashing the big rigs for years. It's especially gratifying late at night on a lonely Interstate Highway. Some of those rigs have elaborate lighting systems and they love to thank you by giving you a good light show!

In the city, heavy traffic, or poor visibility roads I keep the speed down, but on a straight country road with only farm fields on both sides of the road I have been known to goose my MINI a bit, and I have been totally surprised on more then one occasion to see how fast I was going. The MINI is so stable at speed it becomes very deceptive.

I must admit to taking the car to the max,it felt like it was stuck to the road, and thats on a sweeping S curve, coming up to bounce in 5th,I have an MC.
It was late at night, highway was deserted,I know the road, and I have not done it since. But I had to see what the car would feel like.
Doing the limit,1/2 the speed that night,I know this car can stay where I want it,and move where ever I need it to go.
At max,no vibration,steering was responsive,and I felt no sway.
I love this car
