The whole question is really apples to oranges
1. He either wants the options and luxuries or he doesn't.
2. Apparently he cant afford new luxuries
3. He can afford used luxuries
4. He then indicates he can live without and buy new with no options
5. If he can live without the options then just buy a USED car with no options for thousands less than the price hes at now.
6. point 5 is important because of point 2 ....psst .....He cant afford it, but he wants the wonderful experince of a MINI
Buy a used MCS and look around till you find the right one with no options, and put the savings on his debt
Good luck finding a "Plain Jane" used MCS. Those are very hard to find. Most used Cooper S in the market are loaded cars.

I guess I was lucky. I found a 2004 MCS sport package all black w/grey leather- exactly the car I was looking for w/15K miles, extremely well taken care of AND it had an Alta CAI for $20K. I had to drive 75 miles to make the deal but I feel it was worth it and I'm enjoying the heck out of the car. This particular MSC had some light hail damage that was repaired using paintless dent removal- it looks new. I've had this type of work done on several cars and it has always come out looking as good as new. I usually buy our car one to two years old and I've had great luck so far (knock on wood)- just be sure to do a thorough inspection before buying...
Planeguy, your 6 points are right on the money.
This MINI thing has got me by the throat!
Also, factor in a tough sell wife...
I'm drooling in the corner...........

Hang in there, patience is the key. You now have at least one other person looking for a base MCS for you and probably a couple more who posted here.
My MINI was the best purchase I have made ( as far a enjoyment) you will love it even more if you get a great deal and it is still worth what you bought it for 2 years from now.
You will be bored out of your mind with the prius in 6 months.

Planeguy, I'm in northeast Ohio... about an hour and a half from Classic MINI.
Your'e right! Several people have joined in the hunt.
I'm going to have to put this on hold for a couple of weeks... I'm going with my brother-in-law to help him put a new floor in his cabin.
