It's not just a HS thing, I am 40 and when i was considering a car to get I was told by several people (men over 30) that most MINI owners are gay or women. One quote: "buy a MINI, nothing broadcasts homosexual like pulling up in one."

(I am quite sure, by the way, that this guy is in the closet and will stay there)

Anyway, I was also warned off Beetles and Miatas for same reason. WhatEVER. Though I gotta admit it bugged me a little, can't help it. Society I guess leaves its mark. I am ashamed but admit that yes, I almost didnt buy it.

I think it is not just the gay/woman angle, it is because the MINI is "different". Americans are not good with the word "different". We are the finest nation in the world but that willl be our undoing. The MINI is simply too small and odd looking, and the first reaction to something like that is to make fun or disparage it. Shame.

Anyway my wife loves it and kids want her to buy one too. I guess we are just one big gay family!

Buy your MINI, and add my favorite bumper sticker on it, it reads: "I drive a MINI, what are you compensating for?"

That should shut him up....if he gets it (He soesn't seem that bright... )

But... what if the poster happens to have a very small *****? He's straight, but not exactly... hung. Could he, in good faith, display such a bumper sticker?

Mini for gays?? Couldn't be further from the truth!!! A new VW beetle maybe...I mean come on, they come with a factory flower vase, and they handle like minivans, I used to sell VW's and did not enjoy driving them at all.
Just one ride in a Mini cooper or cooper S around a few good corners is all it takes to prove the Mini is all business and no flowers. The Mini is a driver's car 100% and even if you are gay and you love to drive, go get a MINI anyway, noone will think your gay!! PS to add to comments regarding the Mini being popular with the ladies, I have got quite a few looks and smiles, and even a couple of phone #'s last summer! Chicks totally dig 'em.

Here here. The fact that it took this many posts before someone mentioned this fact is disturbing, to say the least.

gay

adj 1: bright and pleasant; promoting a feeling of cheer; "a cheery hello"; "a gay sunny room"; "a sunny smile" [syn: cheery, sunny] 2: full of or showing high-spirited merriment; "when hearts were young and gay"; "a poet could not but be gay, in such a jocund company"- Wordsworth; "the jolly crowd at the reunion"; "jolly old Saint Nick"; "a jovial old gentleman"; "have a merry Christmas"; "peals of merry laughter"; "a mirthful laugh" [syn: jocund, jolly, jovial, merry, mirthful] 3: given to social pleasures often including dissipation; "led a gay Bohemian life"; "a gay old rogue with an eye for the ladies" 4: brightly colored and showy; "girls decked out in brave new dresses"; "brave banners flying"; "`braw' is a Scottish word"; "a dress a bit too gay for her years"; "birds with gay plumage" [syn: brave, braw] 5: offering fun and gaiety; "a gala ball after the inauguration"; "a festive (or festal) occasion"; "gay and exciting night life"; "a merry evening" [syn: gala(a), festal, festive, merry]

Well reading this makes me think anyone driving a MINI IS GAY.
If you love the car who gives a SH!* what others think.
Cheers

Well put, I think this thread has taken on a life of its own, one that is more humorous than anything else... nothing defines a person more than their actions... no matter what their color, nationality, creed religious or sexual orientation... I work in healthcare (go figure by my screen-name) so I have seen people at their worst (illness or death) and their best (those fighting for the patient and the families impacted) and nobody cares in the end....

Drive what you enjoy, live how you like and be happy!

Wow, I have been such a smart @ss thru this posting and then I come up with this...must be the early morning meetings....WHERE IS MY COFFEE!? i NEED MORE COFFEE!!!

Ditto As the Seinfeld episode said, not that there's anything wrong with it -- except for bigots and the insecure.

I know a Gay couple who love their Ford F150. I guess that makes their state of Texas a Gay haven.

Trivia point: Volvo was the first to actively market to Gays. They caught on that many Gays are people with $ and their line appealed to many. Oh gads, does that mean the woman I work with who drives one is a....? I guess I could ask her out, then when she says no conclude Volvos are Gay cars.

Of course this isn't going to change whether or not I am going to get one, but i was just curious whether you guys were made fun of at all for driving a mini.
Shouldn't the kid be saying you would "look like a tranny" if the car is a "women's car"? Just wondering.

I took a gay co-worker to do a site inspection of another theatre today. She had never been in a MINI.Being a scenic artist[painter]she was quite impressed with the interior, both the styling, and how the little car is so big inside. But what she really wanted to see was how the car goes.So I said hold on,hit bounce in 1st and 2nd,did some tight curves, and hard corners. She was hooting the whole time.
My conclusion, like everyone who has or wants a MINI because they look so good, the real reasons most folks want one is,THEY GO LIKE SNOT,AND THEY STICK TO THE ROAD
This whole gay/girl thing is getting old.I don't think of my MINI as cute, but if someone says"Cute car"I say thanks,if someone says"I hear they handle well",we chat,if someone says"I wouldn't be caught dead in one of those"I say nothing, but I'm thinking, good, one less MINI=higher resale

The great thing about the Mini is that it makes it really easy to hook up with other gay guys. A guy driving a Mini is just broadcasting his alternative sexual preference - no "gaydar" required!

Anyway, enjoy your completely gay car. The handling is sublime.
Now THAT is a funny post! Thanks for giving me a good laugh before heading to work!!!

What kind of a statement is that? Are you using "machismo" as an insult?

Would that be a 5-speed, 6-speed, CVT or regular automatic?

Well, I had hoped that the connotation of MINIs as "gay" cars would have come to fruition (no pun intended),if only to stem the tide of women ogling me (or is it the car they're checking out?). But alas, it's either something about me (not likely) or something about the MINI that keeps 'em coming in droves.

This is gay???

Think of it this way dude... if it really is a girls car, whos gonna be asking you for rides in it?? So, if its looking gay that your concerned about think of it like this... while you are cruising into school with 3 girls crammed into your car, he will still be picking up 4 other guys in his old beater pickup truck with a lift kit on it.... so, whos lookin gay now?

Ive had quite a few girls stop me to talk about my car.... heres the trick.... when you see some good looking girls in a parking lot, park as close as possible to them. They will usually say something like "I like your car" or "I want one of those SOOO bad".... your friend's a ******* but he has proved my point... chicks love the cars
