Speedometer calibration

I've found that my speedometer is reading about 2 mph faster than I am actually going. I tested it against my wife's Cadillac and with both of our local radar speed warning signs.

Has anyone else noticed this? Is there a fix?

Of course, I am just fudging and figuring in the extra 2 now

Get it up to 65 or 70 and you'll discover that the speedo is about 5 MPH off, the varience increases with your speed.

It's supposed to do that...

According to my GPS, my speedo is about 2mph off at 70mph. My SA says it can't be adjusted.

This has been dicussed before, you can't change it.The reason is the speedo must read high in Europe,we own cars that come from Europe, get used to it,and it's not a big deal

The urban legend that I heard from my brother the Bimmer mechanic said that they're purposely tuned 2 mph faster so when you get a ticket it's not as high as you think it was .

I've owned a couple of VWs and my brother obviously drives BMWs all the time. This is the way they all are.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. It will be hard for my obsessive-compulsive nature but I'll just have to deal with it!

It's a drastic measure, but you could always go with a larger diameter tire if your OCD continues!

Or always do 2mph faster so it looks like your speeding to passengers but you know your really not.

LOL - this reminds me of my mom's old trick of setting her clocks 5 minutes fast so she wouldn't be late. I kept telling her, "Mom, if you KNOW they're fast, you just factor in that extra five minutes!" But she swore that it helped. I don't think so - she was ALWAYS late for EVERYTHING. . .

My Honda 919 reads about 5 mph fast at 65, so I just run about 5-10 mph faster. . .same thing on the MINI! Just watch out for those tickets. . .

Get a good stopwatch, get on any freeway with mile markers. Set your cruise to 60 mph. which equals a mile a minute. 1 mile should take you 60 seconds to motor. Do this for several miles because the mile markers are not exactly accurate, take an average over 10 or 20 miles. In my 05 CR/B S, with S-lites and run flats, I have to do 63 mph to click off one mile every minute, or 3 mph difference (High).

Now the hardest part of this is setting your cruise at 60 when the speed limit is 70 and everyone on the road is doing 80.

I will try to come up with a program that equates X number of seconds to Y MPH and post it in the near future.

Since when does the cruise in a MINI actually keep a steady, constant speed?

I have a 05 CR/B S Just set it at 75 and don't even think about it again, uphill or down, it stays on 75. Of course it took a while to train it. Everytime it floated more than one mph I would slap it in the down tube. It learned real quick...

If I press&hold (+) to accellerate lets say 5mph faster: when I release it the cars continues to accelerate ~1mph more, but then backs off -3 or -4 mph before holding that speed.

Its like taking 3 steps forward and 2 steps back.
Surely this can be corrected in a firmware upgrade?

When I upgraded to V.38 on my '04 MCS, the cruise control became dead-on accurate. What a difference from the +/- 2-3 mph performance in the past! Since that time I have been upgraded to V.39.x and the JCW 210 software without any loss in the cruise control's stability.

You might want to look into your firmware upgrades's history and see if you can rebuild from V.38 up to the current level. Hmmm...I'd be cautious, though..."if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
