On our new '05 I find the cupholder excellent for holding my GPS unit within view of the driver and easy programming by the front passenger.

i prefer to think of it as my cell phone holder... with the way it is suspended, i can see the phone ringing (yes see - because the sunroof open and whine)... And yes, if I'm working I do need to take some calls (with the handsfree)...

However, my wife likes it, so what can you do? WHAT CAN YOU DO???
Pehaps, there could be an "accident".......

Maybey a Big Gulp with too mught weight would break it off....

(unscrew it and wait till the wife trys to have that thing hold on with only sticky tape on it!!!)

When driving any more than a few miles, I must have something to drink. I'm a very thirsty person. That said, I do not and will not allow any non-bottled drinks in my car. I don't trust cupholders to hold onto 'em, and with closed bottles, the most you get is an de-carbonated soda or well mixed bottle of juice.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this, but I thought that you had to have a shorter screw to put in place of the screw that holds the cupholder once it is removed.

My MA removed the cupholder at my request before I left the dealership. Would have done it myself, but I was told about the screw issue (and I don't have those laying around my garage).

big deal over something that can easily be removed. Just wait until your first rattle or broken windshield - can't wait to see a post from you on that

and what's wrong with hydrating while driving the car for hours?

geez...

I LOVE the cup holder. Love that I got it for free with my '05 and was able to sell it for a few bucks.

I thought it was hideous as well. In fact when I sat in the car for the first time with my MA, I was like "what is that?!" anyways, I had him remove it right then and there.

it is definitely too big for me, but if others like it then o well. just not my cup of tea. I also don't like to drink in the car, and if I do, it's just water in a bottle with a cap that I can just store anywhere without worries.

We obviously all like our MINIs but they're far from perfect.

I'm going to buy a euro-parcel shelf because there is precious little storage space (door pockets are almost useless and the glove box needs an organizer or everything just bounces around).

And speaking of the euro-parcel shelf. OMG, is it possible the europeans actually carry something in their vehicles. I mean they don't ever drink, or eat, or do anything but totally immerse themselves in their professional driving experience. Yet those purists get a euro-parcel shelf and we don't! WTF

Until I get some storage I'm putting my sunglasses, walllet or whatever in the cupholder. Later I'll probably even put a beverage in it!

an amazing array of commentary....

I love ALL my cupholders....

and all the other mounts now on the car...
I am far from home and have no pictures to send...

but the big MINI FINI cupholder .. that came with my '04 MCS holds the Belkin mount for my ipod..

next to that, mounted to the radio, is the Panavise bracket holding up the car mount for a pda/gps...

below that in the right cupholder is the "ashtray" , also supplied with my car.. the ashtray is wonderful way to store coins..

next to that is the bottle holder that holds a 500 ml bottle of water.. as does the one between the seats..

and of course the mount for my cell phone right on the dash..

every thing is in order..

thank you

If you don't like your "amerikan" cupholder, bring a Torx screwdriver and problem solved.
I've got to second that sentament as it's exactly what I was going to respond with when I read TheOldMan's post. Bring a screw driver when you pick it up, or ask the dealership to remove it when it arrives. However, I'd advise you give it a try, I've found it to be the perfect iPod holder.

I don't know how it happened. It was there this morning. I suppose the next door Essuvee owners needed yet another one to put their soda/coffee/big gulp/drinky drink.

And yes, i keep swinging it one way to open the glove box...then the other to get to the climate controls...then back again when I need something in the glove box...then the other way when the car is getting too warm...hey, wait...I HATE THAT DARN CUP HOLDER TOO! Someone get me a screwdriver...

Carol
I am a little confused about having to move it back and forth. If mine is in the notched center position I can open the glove box and access my AC controls with no problem. I never have to move it. Then I thought maybe you do not have the Auto AC. Is that what the difference is?

By the way, I hate the Auto AC way more than I would having to move a cup holder back and forth. I have a convertible that I always drive top-down (yes, I have driven top-down in the rain. It's a blast). I just need tons of hot air (for those cold nights) or nothing. It does not need to be so complicated. I wish I would have spec'd that one different.

Cup holder? I thought it was a flower vase holder!

Seriously - I've transported a potted plant, co-workers' frappaccinos, my husband's fast food container of au jus (for his hot roast beef sandwich au jus), the NavMan (when the suction cup didn't hold it), 8 oz bottle of hand sanitizer, my digital camera, son's delicate pottery project...I could go on - and I've only had the car since December 31st!

I'll keep the gaudy cupholder, thank you very much.

When did they start offering the cup holder, wish I had it a couple days ago while having to hold a soda and shifting at the same time.

Does it come with an OEM straw? Perhaps then it could be located remotely (warm drinks under the bonnet and chilled drinks in the cold pack).

My MA (Rhonda @ Dreyer & Reinbold) made a note to put that monstrosity in the boot and out of site when I take delivery...

I know my wife hats it and asked the salesman to remove it before delivery. If she decides that she needs it, I can easily put it back on.

Here's what you're missing...

Here's a pic of my supermodel, so you can visualize what your interior would be like before being stripped and benuded of the fascinating sculpture that is the cup holder. (The cup holder is now standard on 05 MCS's, although it can be purchased for $50.00 from the dealership).

Here's a picture of someone else's interior (inmini1) from the gallery that shows the plain, generic interior (in anthracite):

Hey, anyone notice that in spite of this "wonderful" cupholder...you can't put a cup of coffe in it without it spilling? Something about its location, the coffee always bounces out (if you have a lid with the small opening as most coffee shops give out). The holder between the seats isn't much better.

Really? So my MCS with a March build date of 3-12 will come with one? I reckon that's okay. They are kinda quirky in a Steve Buscemi sort of way . . . It'll kinda make me laugh every time I think of it . . .

And the icing on the cake!

is the little champagne glass with the circle and bar through it. When I saw that I laughed!

For the spilling coffee, I normally don't do whipped cream on my designer coffees, but I do when driving so it will plug up the hole until I've drank some down!

We love the cup holder. It gave me a place to mount the XM Roady2.

I like the new cupholder and it is less intrusive than the MINIFINI version, because now you can fold and slide forward the front passenger seat to let people in the back go in or out, without bumping the seat into it.

Here is a pic of my '05 MCS anthracite interior with the OEM cupholder in place:
