MINI alarm retrofit kit

Mods - not sure where this should go, so I'm starting it here.

Just got a great deal on a MINI alarm. Though it may be not as good a deal as I thought.

The PN on the box is 82 11 0 306 852 and reads "MINI Retrofit Alarm Kit"
On the install instructions (from Motoringfile),
they list PN 65 75 0 029 310

The kit appears to be complete, with the exception of the tilt sensor that installs in the left rear quarterpanel.
There's no packing list, but the tilt sensor is mentioned in the alarm system owners manual.

Anyone else received either of the above part numbers? Did it have a tilt sensor?
I'm contacting the seller, but figured I'd ask the experts here in the meanwhile.
TIA

On the newer alarm kits, the tilt sensor is now integrated into the siren part of the alarm that installs in the passenger-side cowl area of your car. I've installed two of these alarms kits and I believe that they only came with the motion sensor, the siren piece, and a new wiper stalk that contained the red LED on the tip.

The alarm kits I installed (both of them on 2005 MCS cars) had the 82 11 0 306 852 part number. The alarms list for $295, but you can get them from Classic Auto Parts in Ohio for around $236 or so. Thus, it sounds to me like you got the right part for your MINI as long as it is a 2004 or newer MINI that is pre-wired for the alarm (the older MINIs require a wiring harness to be installed for the alarm and so the kit is more expensive and much harder to install).

I hope this helps some...

Is the Alarm difficult to install for the DIY'ers??? I want to install it on my 05' but i don't see myself paying nearly $700 for the dealer to install it. Is it plug and play at all?

Great info - Thanks Mike, I feel better now! I won't have the rear camera, but I will have the blinking light.

Thameth, take a look at the following link (in the 'Performance/Other' category) for the official PDF and a pictoral essay by a MINI owner. It doesn't look tough at ALL- heck, it's all pre wired! I'll probably install this weekend, and give my $.02.

http://motoringfile.com/howto/

FWIW, I ended up getting mine on ebay - three have sold thus far, for $152-203. A great deal if you're patient!

Here's the direct link to the "personal" install which is specific to MINI's that are pre-wired.

http://home.comcast.net/~sfconnell/mods/alarm/home.htm

Its definitely a VERY easy install to anybody that knows how to use a screw driver and their hands hehe.

Now the only thing i wonder is if there is a specific 05' Kit now because from that one it looks like he replaced the right side stalk which now includes the washer fluid level indicator. It looks like you would lose that function with the kit in the link.

I haven't seen an '05 kit yet, but they are supposedly in the works. Yes, it replaces the left (turn signal) stalk instead of the now WWF lighted stalk.

BTW, I took a short break from work and installed the motion sensor and the stalk - tres easy. The siren goes on as soon as I get home!

I guess i'll have to wait for an 05' kit then. Otherwise it looks like a very easy install.

Hi Guys,

Yes, the kit is pretty easy to install. The hardest part is taking apart the steering column trim to install the new control stalk with the flashing red LED on it. It's not bad if you follow the tips given in the "How To" articles posted on Motoringfile (as mentioned above), but it can be a tiny bit overwelming for someone who's not used to working with interior trim. However, I'd say that the average person (with the correct set of tools - torx drivers, etc.) should be able to install the alarm kit without too much trouble.

As for getting the right kit for the 05's... If your hardtop 05 MCS was built BEFORE Jan 1st, 2005 then you can use the part number mentioned above for your alarm kit. It will replace your current wiper stalk with a new one that has the red flashing LED on the tip of it. If however your hardtop 05 MCS was built ON/AFTER Jan 1st, 2005 then you're SOL for now as the kit still isn't available. Since the Jan 1st 2005 and later MINIs have the new low washer fluid indicator LED on the wiper stalk, the newest alarm kits will now have to have the red flashing LED moved over to the headlamp stalk instead. These new kits still aren't available, but they should be soon I'd imagine (as it's already been three months now).

I hope this helps some...

They (dealer) installed it for $110.00 total of $413.00 after taxes. Your

$700 is what I think I was quoted also for the 2005 alarm installed. I've torn into too many cars in the past to do installs to pay that much for a $300 accessory with so little work. The ~ $400 installed price would be reasonable considering I'll have to pay for a half hour of labor to enable the alarm.

Anyways, I've gotta wait till the 05 version is released.

Red light flashes w/o programming??

Installed the alarm last weekend - level of difficulty 2/5, only because trying to place the bolt for the bottom of the siren bracket is a @#$^^. I kept dropping it under the ABS module.

Was all ready to call the dealer to program the computer -- when I noticed this morning that the red lighted stalk was flashing.
Haven't had a chance to test it, but it would seem that if the light is flashing, the alarm is armed.

Anyone else installed their alarm and had the light flash before taking to the dealer for reprogramming??

I'll jack it up tonight to see if the tilt sensor is working. In the manual, it says the motion sensor is not armed if the windows are not up, though people have stated that they've tested their motion sensor by leaving the window down and then waving their hand inside. It's raining , so I can't perform that test anyway.

Any luck with the alarm working w/o dealer programming?

In the alarm retro fit pdf (10/2001) funtion test #5 is to trip the ultrasonic module approx. 1 min after arming by waving your hand through an open window. Did you try it?

I swapped tires this weekend without setting off the alarm, but now I can't remember if I had unlocked it first.

I hadn't noticed the functional test scenarios - I'll give them a shot and report back.

alarm retrofit

I had to have it programed by the dealer after I installed mine. I have a 2003 MC and it was pre-wired for alarm. I tested the ultrasonic by leaving windows down and waving my hand inside approx 1 min after arming alarm. I know that people who have it and leave their windows cracked to releave heat have problems with the alarm going off because of things OUTSIDE the car.
Good luck!!

Hey Chocolate, did you notice if your alarm light went on BEFORE you got it programmed? Mine did -- which kind of surprised me.

Alarm kits for cabrios?

All the installation guides seem to be for the hardtop. Does anyone have any idea where they put the motion sensor in the cabrio?

Should a cabrio even have a motion sensor given that the top might be down and something could "float" in there to set it off?

Is there any info on when the 2005 kit will be released?

I think i'm gonna send Gabe @ MotoringFile a quick shout to see if he has heard anything or can find out.
