Anyone remove warning labels from visor?

Has anyone attempted, or succeeded in, the removal of the air bag / seat belt warning labels on the sun visors?

My wife HATES them and even started to try to lift a corner to peel one off.

I stopped her so I could check it out here with you before she made a mess of it.

Lots of people have done it with success. Here's a thread with some tips

Here's what worked for me...

There is a very simple way to accomplish this. Grab a can of Goof Off (Home Depot has it as probably Lowes and others as well). Take some masking tape and line the borders of the label to protect the visor.

Take the Goof Off and apply it to the label. Let it sit for about a minute or so. Finally, start to peel back the label until it comes off. That's it! Works like a charm.

Don't spill Goof Off anywhere, it will wreck the dash if it gets on it. Goo Gone is a little safer if you end up using that.

Lots of different techniques (good and bad) can be found here: http://www.gbmini.net/mtblog/archive...ite_head.shtml

The one thing that really caught my attention was the person from MINI2 who said they removed the visors from the car before applying any solvent. This would seem like the right thing to do especially after reading Ian's experience in the link above.

Let us know what you did and how it turned out.

You can use denatured alchohol also.

Remove the visors ---probably me. I used alcohol. Rather than blotting, I unrolled a couple of cotton *****, soaked them and spread them over the stickers. After about 5-10 min. ***** up a corner with your fingernail, then roll it up with a finger. Don't rub anything on it,the ink will smear off onto the visor (more work)

You can heat a label with a hair dryer too. The adhesive will soften, and peel easier. You can follow up with the denatured alcohol to remove any residue.

*Don't* try to peel it off with a fingernail, you'll just scratch the visor. I'ts printed directly onto the visor with a rubberized ink. It is not a removable sticker. However the rubberized ink can be softened and removed with a number of substances. I used simple isopropyl alcohol from the medicine cabinet. Just keep rubbing the 'sticker' with a rag dampened with the alcohol until it starts to get gummy and wad-up. Keep rubbing till t rubs off.

It’s very likely that there is more than one type of “sticker” used on the MINI sunvisors. On BMWs of the same year and model there are at least three types: (1) a sticker that can be peeled off with a little chemical help, (2) a type that appears to be silk-screened onto the visor and requires a lot of scrubbing with Goof Off, (3) an intermediate type that can be scrubbed off with alcohol or Goo Gone.

The stickers on my ‘04 were similar to the intermediate BMW type. Goo Gone was working, but not very well, so I switched to Goof Off - scrubbed with cotton *****. On my '02 Z3 they were type (2) and were pretty difficult - a lot of determined scubbing with Goof Off.

It’s well worth the small effort to remove the visors and do the removal elsewhere - makes the task much easier and there’s no danger of spotting the MINI’s interior.

Note that a lot of scrubbing with Goof Off will soften the vinyl and allow it to stretch - the visor will look as though it is ruined beyond repair. When you are finished just wash it off with mild soapy water and after about 20-30 hours it will have tightened back up and look like new again.

As brgfan said, don’t pick off the little pieces with your fingernail or any kind of tool - you will leave permanent marks on the vinyl! Change cotton ***** frequently and just keep wiping and scrubbing - you should be able to get every tiny piece of the sticker off in less that 20 minutes. If you’re very lucky you’ll have the type than just peels off and all you’ll really have to do is get rid of the adhesive.

Amature. Talk to us when you start ripping them of matresses.

If you rub chemicals on it it smears the ink all over the visor ,just soak, once its softened ,yes ***** a corner and roll up. then some gentle rubbing to remove any residue. If you remove the visors you can soak both at once.No spills or sore neck,no stinking up the car.

I just kept mine on... sorta like having "warnings of eminent death" stickers to scare the passengers...

I did peel off the one on the dash though, and cleaned the surface with GooGone.

I ultimately decided that removing the warning labels would also take away
the original, 'factory fresh' feeling of the cabin. They are intended to be permanent.......otherwise they would have been designed to come off easily. As an adult with a mild form of ADD I actually appreciate anything anyone wants to do to help keep me focused on the driving while I'm behind the wheel.

Those tags don't even make it out of the store.
I go matress shopping just to add to my collection.

To top it off I call the matress police on the people I've ripped the tags off of.

What's the trick to removing the screw covers on the mirrors (obviously I'm challenged in the do-it-yourself area)? I don't want to mangle them trying to get them off.

I would prefer to tackle this task sitting down at a table rather than looking up at the visor and possibly getting Goo Gone (or whatever I end up using) on something I shouldn't.

I've now heard alcohol, Goof off and goo gone. Which is the safest and easiest to use?

Thanks for your help.

I popped the covers off using a small screwdriver with a thin blade.

Alcohol is least aggressive, but safest. Goof Off is most aggressive, but least safe. Goo Gone falls in the middle.

ditto what Nick says. If you don't have a small screwdriver handy, smack the end of a paperclip with a hammer & dull the end with sandpaper. stab it in the front or side of the button & it will move out the more you push in. Remove screw.remove black cloth tape covering connecter for mirror light & unplug connecter. If you use denatured alcohol make sure its 91% isopropal rubbing alcohol rather than the weaker version. If you do use alcohol cover it with toilet paper/unrolled cotton ***** so it won't evaporate so fast. leave it alone for 10 -15 min. roll it up. Then you can unroll it under the toilet seat or somewhere equally useless.

I destroyed the clear plastic cover showing what gear I was in when I used Goof Off in my last car. You have to be very careful with that stuff....it completely ruins clear plastic. Makes them hazy.

Just soak a rag in Denatured Alcohol and rub the labels for several minutes each - they'll "melt" and you'll be able to roll and peel off the labels.

Cheers,
Ryan
