Does Your MCS Sputter

I've noticed that my 04 sputters when I'm sitting at lights or just chilling with the motor running. It doesn't do it all the time but when it does, the whole car shakes, as if it was a v-twin Harley.

Any clues?????

Give it a corner kick to the throttle, should be fine.

That does work! But wasn't sure if there is a fix for it at the dealer or if I would be wasting my time taking it to them.

My Mc does drop idle every now and then, does not shudder, but I have noticed the rpm drop below 500 from time to time while sitting.I don't worry about it.It does not stall, and runs itself back to normal 800 rpm idle in a heart beat

Has it been doing it since you got her? If so, I guess if it's not broke, don't fix it. I've just heard stories of these cars stalling at lights for no reason. Just making sure this problem does lead to that.

thanks

One can of BG44K every 7500 miles or so should keep any EFI car running smooth. Sounds like your injectors need serious cleaning. Jimbo

Funny how we forget the simpliest things. Hope you're right. I've had other EFI engines but none that idled this strong. I haven't noticed any loss in power when accelerating out of these moments, either. If I sit at idle for a minute or so, it corrects itself. It's only happened to me about a dozen times in the past year.

Well the last post comment may fix it.But I say take the car for a good run on the highway, not going for MPG,but running the revs up around 4500-5500,back down to 3000 then back up again.Over and over, clean it out,and get the computer used to the car working.

Don't put anything other than premium gas in your tank.Drive the car like it was intended, high revs,no ******* it,and it will be fine.My 03 MC has gurgled down from idle a few times, never stalled, and I did nothing to help it back but blip the throttle. These cars,MC and MCS want to go,low revs are boring, high revs are what they want to do.
Now maybe 5000RPM is not how you want to cruise on the highway, but hitting 5500 RPM on the way there won't hurt anything.

Drive it hard? If you only knew.... I tear this little car up. Every stop light I pull up to is another opportunity for me to show other drivers what these little cars can do. Highways are my playground. So it's getting cleaned out every time I drive her so I'm not really sure it's the fuel injectors. I feel like it's the computer doing something because it just starts and stops for no reason.

Well it sounds like you drive like I do,not that I bother hitting it hard from a dead stop, first gear is to get rolling,2nd and 3rd are for showing off
Maybe take it in if it is a problem,if my car stalled sitting I would.

My 03 MC did the same thing occasionally. Never stalled. Just needed a little blip to the throttle like lot says. I learned to live with it. Now having said that, my 05 MC has never dropped rpms. They always seem to be around 1000-1200 when idling. The dog gone MINI always wants to go

I can't beleive nobody else has chimed in on this one. If you've gone into the "Beneath the bonnet" or "Performance Mod" forums you would see that the sputtering and almost stalling is a software problem that pretty much started with the latest ECU update.

Has nothing to do with injectors or driving the car hard. Its something that BMW has been working on since day one with the yo-yo.

As stated above, don't put ANYTHING in your tank other than premium gas! if something were to go wrong with your engine the dealer will blame the injector cleaner.

I thought the yo yo problem was with the S. Also my 03 MC did this from the time I bought it(March 03) In fact when I took it in for the voluntary emissions recall & they upgraded the ECU, the car ran better! And yes, 2 years ago I posted about my problem & was told MC's don't have the yo yo problem, they just sputter But the 03 is gone & my 05 runs just fine. BMW must have figured something out

Isn't that kind of high for idle,Poco holds a steady 800 RPM idle

Yeah, I thought so too but I've watched it & it holds pretty steady around 1000 rpms or slightly above. Doesn't seem to affect the performance of the car. Besides it's a girl car Higher metabolism

Maybe it's like how dogs become like their humans,I'm kind of laid back,Ruby is pretty laid back,so I guess Poco is too
Well at idle we are laid back, but the three of us do get reved up on the backroads

Thanks Thameth,
I had a feeling it wasn't the fuel injectors but something to do with the computer. I'll take her in again. They claim they updated her at her 10K checkup while doing the emission recall thing, but they didn't remember to reset the oil change reminder so maybe they forgot to do the upgrade too.

Well the problem hasn't been figured out yet so i'm not sure a software update will help... sorry.
