R53 JCW Suspension

Hey Hatchtalk, so my JCW R53 has treated me nothing but great, but the ride here in LA can be so bumpy. Im 205/45/ZR17 Tires. My car has 63,000 miles so i’m not sure if struts or shocks may need to be replaced. What would be the recommendation since every little bump I go over seems like I hit the biggest pothole?

Probably better to outline your specific objectives beyond as stated, i.e., OEM equivalent or "performance" aftermarket replacements? Spend budget? DIY installation? Current tires being runflat or non-runflat type? Simply choosing +1 size 215/45R17 non-runflats would soften the ride a bit with carcass style and more air volume "cushion" isolation from rough road surfaces. Without knowing those aspects, my thinking would be to retain the OEM springs but upgrade to Bilstein or Koni struts/shocks compatible with those non-lowering springs.

Before you go replacing shocks and struts, test them by pushing down quickly on the front end with all your body weight and then quickly releasing. Was it easy to push down? Does the front end bounce up and down when you release? Test the rear the same way. If firm and no easy bounce, you don't need new shocks and struts....yet. I'd say MCS4FUN has a good idea with the 215/45x17 tires. If you wanted to take it a step further, you could go to 16 inch wheels which would give you a taller tire and even softer ride. Depending on the wheel selected, be careful to ensure that they'll clear your front brake calipers.

My '04 MC40 came with the Sport Plus suspension which was ridiculously hard and uncomfortable. I replaced it with Monroe QuickStruts that are a full unit w/springs, shocks, mounts, etc. The ride is fantastic for the street -- nice and smooth (but not too smooth). I don't track my car but enjoy speeding around a bit on the street and they are perfect for my style of driving. If you're going to track your Mini then Monroe is not the way to go. BTW, I also run 215/45x17s.

Are you on run flats? They are miserable - we moved to Michelin Summer only Pilots - currently on sport 4S. Running 215/45/17 - 1 size up - that way since 2006 - yes, I know - no spare. We do keep a full size at home.
