R50/53 "easy load" system
"easy load" system
However, Mini Convertible owners with bulky items to carry need not despair. By turning two levers in the boot, the rear fastening of the roof can be released allowing the rear section to be raised. This creates a wide aperture through which larger items can be loaded. In fact, by using this ‘easy load’ facility and putting the rear seats down, the Mini Convertible instantly offers 605 litres of storage space.
Thanks.
Check out this review of the Cabrio S at cars.com for some pix. It's a bit hard to explain until you see it in person. The bottom part of the convertible top frame is hinged to fold up to provide a wider opening. Works like a charm once you get used to it.

Think of a clam! You can also enlarge the boot by placing the shelf in the higher position option. I didn't discover this for about a month. Only problem is the top cannot be lowered when the shelf is raised. In the low position the window sits on the shelf when the top is down. As a safety feature, the top mechanism does not work when the shelf is raised. Have I confused you
Also the bars clamp onto a mechanism when doing the clam thing. I discovered this after trying to put grocery bags in the boot while trying to hold the top up. It's all very nifty after you figure it out
