04 mini engine/trans doesn’t disengage

Hey all!

wife just got a 04 mini, great little car but I was driving it today and noticed this weird thing with the trans when I let off the gas pedal the engine slows the car down instead of it being in neutral. Another little issue is when she first starts it the idle is a little rough and it feels like the car is gonna stall. Might be related? Any ideas what this could be?

thanks in advance.

From: Under the car. As per normal.
Based on your description guessing this is a normally aspirated, non-supercharger equipped (spare tire but no hood scoop) R50 model with the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Is that correct?

Either that or the only other thing he's ever driven is a two-stroke Saab.
