To be sung to the tune of “where have all the flowers gone”
but seriously, I have an 02 R53. I’m in the process of a top end re rebuild. Pulled the head off yesterday and checked the head and block for straightness. They both look good. Can’t get a feeler gauge under any part of the straight edge. The head was resurfaced in July so it is mirror clean. I cleaned the top of the block and ran a hone over it w WD 40. It’s clean and ready for a new HG. The HG was replaced in July and I really can’t see where it was bad. It was leaking coolant into cylinder #2, but I can’t see a bad spot. Hope the new HG solves the problem. Anybody still use copper spray? Consensus seems to be NO on a viton gasket. Just curious.
also saw 99% of the grey coating on the SC impellers is gone (mostly in the oil in the SC). The snout bearing was pretty noisy when the car was running so I want to get it serviced.
any recommendations for a company to give it a refresh?
The coating was only on JCW superchargers before the facelift for the 2005 model year. After the facelift, the only difference was the pulley size.
Unless your car had a JCW SC installed, or a previous owner had the rotors coated, I don’t know what that dark patch could be. Not sure how durable aftermarket coatings are, but the rotors look too clean to be peeling JCW coating. What is the milky looking film off to the sides in the oil residue?
Not sure if they’re still an option but a lot of people used Stiegemeier back in the day. You can also check with Detroit Tuned or Way Motor Works about rebuilds or rebuilt exchanges.
pretty sure this is the original. From the reading I’ve done, the first couple of years they offered the S, the impellers were painted w a grey coating. So that little spot you see in the picture is all that is left on the impeller. The milky white stuff you asked about is the grey coating that has come off and has been sloshing around in the oil for god knows how long.
