Mini Cooper S 2005 R53 Power Steering

Hi All, We have a 2005 Mini Cooper S 2005 6 speed 160,000 miles and when the vehicle is stopped (ignition turned off) I could hear a buzzing noise that appears to be coming from the power steering pump. After restarting the vehicle, I can easily drive it and steering appears to be fine. However, after driving onto ramps, I can feel the power steering pump vibrating when the ignition is off. Any thoughts on if you think this power steering pump has gone bad? I checked the fluid and it appears to be at the correct level. The power steering fan does not appear to vibrate. I disconnected the battery while I figure this one out. Thanks for your help. Greatly appreciated.

It should be replaceable under recall, my 05 with 210k was eligible when I called. I think they replace the whole system.

A simple thing to try: Check the fluid level and then, with engine running, turn wheel fully left then right three times.

PUMP turns on with key turn before cranking

Hi,

I have a 2005 Cooper S, original pump, 158K KM, I'm original owner and had the PS pump lines replaced in 2018, with advisory of sweat at the pump and have had it working fine since. It has recently gotten a bit louder but nothing out of the ordinary what I did notice is when turning the key to position 2 "ignition on" all the way before cranking the engine "position 3" it appears to power the PS pump, not normal and I am able to move the steering without the engine being on. The pump works perfectly fine just wondering if this electrical glitch is faulty internal wiring somewhere that can be resolved without having to replace the pump ? Any ideas would be appreciated.

It appears to be intermittent, normally turning the key makes small buzzing sound then all noises stop, all dash lights on etc, before turning engine on, but now it seems to be powering the power steering when turning the key just before ignition, and seems to stay on until I got back one position with the key.

Thanks

Anthony
