Scratched Camshaft

Many of you that are active on nam are aware of the rmw upgrade head I am doing and since I am replacing my old scratched camshaft it shouldn’t matter that it’s scratched. Yet I want to know how that scratch came about. I will upload a picture for you guys to see but I want to understand why that happened. Maybe a simple cam replacement wouldn’t fix it and since I got a cam from rmw I don’t want to ruin that if the problem still stands in my engine. Could it be poor oil circulation? I was thinking that because before I removed the head, I would hear a slight ticking sound on cold starts and only after a minute of idling the sound would disappear. Also one of my rocker arms was shot too. Don’t remember if that was the rocker arm that was touching the scratched exhaust lobe. But let me know what you guys think.

i was also reading about valve float and I did at one point experience a random loss of power when I put my foot to the ground. Again this was all before I removed the head. Many ppl said it’s my bypass valve getting old and stuck to which I replaced with DT Bypass valve when doing the head. When starting the car again after the rmw head I used another stock cam that I had laying around in rlly good condition. The problem doesn’t occur anymore but I also haven’t been dailying the car since there’s a head gasket leak sending exhaust to the coolant system so I don’t know 100%. But please tell me what could have possibly caused the scratched lobe. Thanks !

Probably something got in between the lobe and the roller. The roller got damaged and continued to damage the lobe. Highly unusual case, I'd say.

I don't think it scratched, though it appears that way.
the stock internals suffere from pitting and that top coating would start coming off.. I wonder if that's what the issue was...idk if old , bad oil or just age would cause that but it is a pretty common issue with higher mileage engines.

since this was my stock cam, engine has 184k stock internals. On cold starts, I hear a continuous ticking sound. Like a spinning sound. Sounded like something was being shaven off everytime it spins

My original camshaft had a lobe or 2 (on cylinder 1) with wear like that I noticed when inspecting my valvetrain during a valve cover gasket replacement last year. The engine had about 158k miles on it at the time. I have owned the car since new and had been pretty good with maintenance.

As my engine was impressively clean inside, I attribute the wear to material defect rather than oiling problem or anything else. I was planning on installing a performance camshaft (and new rockers) while I continued running my car like that until I overheated the engine.

So you say that it was just normal age/wear that occurred to the exhaust lobe?
