Key fob question

Hi all. I have a 2006 base model hatch and I was wondering if I wanted just the keyless entry function of a separate fob, would I be able to use one of the round fob/keys? I know it obviously wouldn't be of use starting the car but does anyone know if the keyless entry portion would program to the system in a turn key car? Thank you and I'm sorry if this is a dumb question.

Yes, it will. Just be sure to get the 315Mhz circuit board for the US market.
You could also get another key cut, but as you say, it won't start the car because of the mi$$ing EWS chip.

^^^ Seems he'll need to use an existing key as part of the initialization process? By that, this procedure snagged elsewhere but with new fob in hand and existing key in the ignition as described. Also noting, I haven't tried this on my spare key, since its internal battery is flat and I won't risk messing up my primary key which functions normally. If for mine with same objective and since they're cheap on eBay, I'd buy the compatible key blank with buttons for late 1st Gen facelift models and follow the same procedure.

"...put the key in the ignition, turn it to Pos 1 and Off again. Remove the key, press & hold the Open Button while pressing the Locking Button 3 times. The Door mechanism will confirm the initializing."

Thank you for your answers! I cracked my key open and soldered in a new power cell and was actually able to get it to program to my car using the above mentioned method. I've had my car since January and haven't had keyless entry since then. I was thrilled. My car only came with one key. So I was hoping to provide myself with some kind of backup fob.
