05 R53 front main seal leak

My buddy’s mini came back with an oil leak. Back side of car covered in oil. I found the front main seal leaking - easy enough to replace. What I found odd was that the seal was out about 1/8” on the bottom. The prior owner had just had some oil leaks fixed - unsure what. I’ve fixed a number of others (mostly sensor orings). High crankcase pressure doesn’t seem to be a common issue on these from what I’ve seen.

I’ll check the PCV - any known issues associated with this?

Cleaned leaking seal

Before - seal sticking out.

Sounds as if the seal wasn't installed properly or it's the wrong seal. No way it should back out.

I am leaning that way. My main concern is is it has high crankcase pressure pushing out the seal. VW 2.0 TSIs have a crappy pcv system and weak bonded rear main seals. Blows them right out!

He is going to run it hard and see what happens 😀
