AC Compressor/Clutch Question

Was changing the clutch on my ac compressor (2004 base mini) and awhile after getting the bolt off that holds the pulley on, all the green freon (i assume it is?) exploded from the screw hole. Can I assume there's something fundamentally wrong with the compressor since this happened? I did this same procedure on a friends car and had nothing like this happen. Replacing the clutch worked great-

Needless to say I got it all together and the AC still doesn't work even though the lines are charged back up. Was going to try one less washer shim but thinking that might be a waste of time. Thanks in advance!

and apologies if I posted this in the wrong place. Happy to take down and re-post elsewhere.
