Screwed up fuel pump / filter change. Where did I go wrong?

2003 Mini Cooper base 5 speed.
. So I had a crank no start issue and assumed it was the fuel pump because I couldn't hear it priming. I bought a new pump and filter. Before I took out the old pump I gave it a nice bang or 2 with a hammer. It kicked on and the car started fine after that.

Because I had the new parts though I decided to put them in. I replaced the pump and the filter, seemed pretty easy. After I completed the job I hear the pump loudly prime when I turn the key but she just cranks. I realize the system would need to pressurize but she just cranked and cranked, never fired up. I tied for 5 mins

I noticed lot of plastic components in and under the fuel filter housing, could I have messed something up in there that caused a no start? Sucking in air perhaps? I took both apart 3 times and put back, still just cranking, I even tried putting the old pump in, still just cranks. I'm looking for any ideas, thanks. Fuse under dash looks good too

Check to be sure all the sealing surfaces are tight? Also did you mark the cap to get the right torque or did you use a other methods?

I want to say I’ve read that can be a problem...
