'02 Blown Supercharger - Help !

Hey all,

I'm sure this has been covered, hopefully not an issue to be starting a new thread! Have an '02 S with 120k on the clock, supercharger just went. It's by no means in perfect shape with some rust along the bottom of the doors and rear taillights (Northeast problems) I'd still like to save it as I have a laundry list of parts that was ready to go in and plenty on it already. Evidently I did everything but service the supercharger

I'm a bit lost as to whether I should remove the supercharger and get it refurbished somewhere, or is it possible to do this yourself? Have the space and tools, however it seems complicated. The only ones I see for sale are used superchargers on eBay that seem somewhat suspect. Spending close to $1k on a new one seems silly given the value of a slightly rusty 20yo car lol.

Secondly, the car probably only drove another 30 yards under power after the rattling noise began from the supercharger bearings blowing around (I assume)

Do I need to worry about these getting through the intake etc and ruining other things, or is this something I can check when the supercharger is off? At 120k, should I just find a low mileage S motor w/ supercharger, and just swap the whole thing ? Haven't tested the compression but it's probably no better than OK at this point in it's life.

Thanks ya'll !

First, check to see if the crank damper pulley has failed. Not realistically possible for the average DIYer to rebuild the supercharger; best to look for a used one from a credible seller; expect to pay $250-350 for one. Why do you assume that the supercharger bearings failed? It is unusual for superchargers to fail precipitously. I would look for other explanations.

Thanks JAB!

I'll check that on that. Now that you mention it, the crank damper was on my list of things to soon replace. On quick inspection looking down into the pulley area, it seemed ok? The pulley still had tension etc. There is a prominent rattle coming from front higher end the of engine bay that sounded like bearings rattling around, which I assumed was supercharger failure, but have not had the chance to investigate yet (Luckily picked up a cheap R55 just before this breakdown that I've been driving )

Any suggestions on credible sellers? I'm seeing superchargers in the $350 price and up with 130k on them which I worry won't go very long.
