I have had my MCS for about two weeks, but haven't really driven it much. My power steering makes a really loud whining sound....seems like its louder than you would think it should be. Has anyone experienced louder than normal whining with their power steering? Is this normal for the MINI? I plan on having it checked out by the dealer when I take it in for programming, but considering what has happened to other people when taking it in, I'm afraid they might say there is nothing wrong with it, when there really may be.

So anyone else out there with loud power steering??

Recent threads have mentioned something about a power-steering cooling fan under the engine that is somewhat exposed and prone to sucking up road debris.

The MINI has a supposedly-very-sophisticated electric power steering system (as opposed to hydraulic fluid), which is the reason for the relatively loud noise that accompanies it, particularly at low driveway-type speeds. I kind of like it.

The car makes some pretty funny noises... The steering is assisted by an electric motor instead of a hydraulic pump like most cars. Mine whines too, I think they all do. I wouldn't worry about it unless it starts getting louder... maybe have your friendly service person listen to it next time you are at the dealer?
