About 2 years ago, my serpentine belt broke loose (only had a few thousand miles on it) and damaged the connection to the compressor coil. There's just one strand of the wire still hanging in there (see pic).
The AC still works though my wife reports it's not running as cool as it should lately.
Is it possible that the coil is not full energizing and so the clutch is not fully engaging? (explaining the poor AC performance).
I've been putting off repairing it as I don't see a way of reattaching the wire to the coil. I need to do the water pump soon so figure I'll address a few other things while I'm in there.
I guess my options are:
- an aftermarket coil (any recommendations?),
- some sort of repair on the current coil (solder etc.)
- a whole new compressor (seems like overkill).

Tell her she's more than welcome to take MTS to go brunching on Sunday - they keep those bad boys beer cooler cold, with comfy plastic seats, plenty of legroom, all the mumbling smelly strangers she can ever hope to talk to, and only $2.25 each way! In the mean time, it's San Diego. In winter. Has she considered cracking a window or losing the Ugg boots and fleece pullover?
Compressor is likely overkill. Probably the coil is too. At this point with that rat's nest it looks like certain incidental grounding, which could intermittently de-energize the coil while driving, leading to sub-par performance, early coil death, and/or blow the fuse. Maybe wrap it up with electrical tape before you eventually replace the wire and the fitting?
Oh, and the how-to if you do go the coil replacement route:
But it leads back to my original question. I don’t see a way to repair the wire as is. The ‘fitting’ appears to be integrated into the coil itself.
