Getrag 5 Speed Rebuild Video Series
Last year I started experimenting with YouTube and filmed a series of videos detailing my experiences rebuilding my Getrag 5 speed transmission from my 2005 R50. This includes my mistakes (I broke the case!) and the manufacturing defects I found inside. I do grumble a bit through it, but there is a lot of information for anyone who is thinking of tackling one of these transmissions and wants a heads up on what they will find so they are not going into it blind. I did this with no service manuals (there were none to be found), no torque specs and only my own good judgement stemming from my limited experience building a few transmissions for my own cars in the past, so take anything you see with a bit of skepticism. This is not professional advise nor is it comprehensive, so do it at your own risk. I just thought I would post this here to put it out in the community for anyone who wants to see it. One final comment though: If you end up going with the reverse idler gear off Ebay, it seems to have been ground wrong and is the source of the noise. I am planning to take it out and swap it's bushing to the original gear, so you may wish to consider doing that to your trans if you decide to go that route.
This transmission would be used in a 2005-2006 R50 MINI Cooper or MINI One as well as the 2005-2008 R52 (convertible) Cooper (non-S). If you have an earlier model, you have a Midlands transmission that is not related to this one.
