Does anyone have a remote starter installed in their Mini?

I havent heard anyone having success with a remote starter setup. The reason is because the MINI has a stater/engine disable system that uses an embedded chip in the key. The key has to be in or at least near the ignition for the engine to start.

One would need to have an extra 'chip' programmed to the car and placed near the ignition switch in order to 'unlock' the immobilizer.

Lots of modern vehicles have such a system. They can be worked around, but it's generally no fun (former installer here). Sometimes the installer will just take the chip out of one of the keys & affix it near the switch somewhere under the plastic covering. There are also specific devices for some cars made to replicate the chip's signal for the remote start system. Personally, I wouldn't recommend a remote starter. If you saw what has to be done ( ) in order to make some work, you probably wouldn't want one..

I'm an installer and have installed 100's of these things but i still don't have one in the MINI. (I got one in my sentra, tho ). Most of the modules that bypass factory immobilizer systems need some sort of antenna ring that goes around the key cylinder to transmit the code to bypass the system. because of the way the MINI's key cylinder is, there's no way to hide it, and it wouldn't look too good. BMWs are the same way, and interestingly enough, most owners don't care about the exposed antenna ring. Its a great thing to have, if you dont mind having the antenna ring showing. Just be make sure you go to a reputable shop, and avoid places like best buy or circuit city. Also, if your car is stick, most places won't touch it (I know my shop won't).
