Has anybody checked the accuracy on a long highway trip where there isn't any stop time between fill-ups?
The OBC should sum the amount of gas and divide by the total distance to get average MPG. Current MPG is an average of a small sliver of time (1-5 seconds). From the jumps in the MPG display the assumption is that the calculation is performed in litres/100km and then converted. As such, when you are standing still the consumption is 0.1 litres/ 0km = "--.--".

I am surprised the cats don't melt down with that much gas passing through.
I don't ever do a steady 4k rpm. My commute has no straight longer than 2 blocks so I'm on either the gas or the brake the whole time. Now that I'm learning to balance the front heavy FWD car through the turns I'm carrying at least 10mph more through turns that I don't need to stop for. I do let the car warm up for a few min before I start going and cool down for a bit before I get out. I guess my poor gas mileage is from my overly fun commute

I also have a heavily modded MCS with a JCW kit. In addition I did get the exterrior chrome cold weather package, and auto wipers. I am 6'3" and 200 lbs. My comute is about 1/3 stop and go, 1/3 highway and 1/3 "twisty". I now have about 2000 miles on the car. The firt 1000 miles I did not have the JCW kit. The first tank I got 26 MPG, the second tank I got 27 MPG, the third tank I got 28 MPG then the JCW kit was installed, (see a pattern here), the fourth I got 29, the now I get 30.+ (looks like a pattern).

I keep hearing people complain about the mileage and I just don't get it. I shift about mid range, I have LOTS of fun on the twisty part of my commute, and I smoke the occassional "Rice Burner" (just to let them know the Brits are alive and well). So frankly I am amazed at how good the milage on these cars is.

Drive safe

When you never get out of 2nd gear, your fuel economy suffers.

Below is a bike route around here which is described as 'mostly flat with some rolling hills'. 4420' climb in 46 miles. (23.4 climb, 23.7 descending).

I'd kill for a road like that around here

I live in San Diego (where your map is showing), and I wouldn't be too jealous of that particular route. I'm sure it's better on a bike, but those roads are too crowded to be much fun in a car, at least for a consistent period of time.

Even us lucky San Diegans have to head out to the mountains to find clear running!

You have no idea how good you have it At least you have a Canyon to go to. Twisty roads are so rare around Metro Detroit that few that exist are in parks with 35mph limit and cruisers hiding in wait

Imagine if your commute involved making a right or left turn every block (save for one). The one place I don't turn for about 2 blocks is an uphill highway onramp that rarely has any traffic and I get off the freeway maybe 400 feet later. I am either accelerating or slowing down throughout the entire commute.

I'm sure it is my driving style/ commute that is killing the mileage. My other car is a supercharged M coupe so I drive the MINI pretty hard to get to my "fun" level. That's why I got the JCW anyway. Not enough power in the midrange and top end. 3800+ rpm is not too shabby post JCW.

I have an '03 MC with DSC and runflats. At the 16k mark, my MPG is suddenly much worse for no apparent reason. The OBC is pretty accurate in my case, and I had been getting 27-29 mpg in commuter/suburban driving. Now I'm getting 22-25 all of a sudden with no real change in trip characteristics. It's a little colder but not that much, and I'm not running AC now either. Unhappy.
