R50/53 Waiting for the Steptronic 6 speed automatic tranny before ordering your Cooper "S"?
I got my 05 MCS in August having never driven a manual. I am getting better with every drive, but still have a auto Impala (company car) that I drive every day, so I do not get as much practice. I am anxious to test the auto S to see what the performance is like. I was tempted to order one without testing and sell my stick, but decided to be patient.
This may cause some friction, but I think it is pointless to judge someone based on a preference for transmissions. I have driven alot of automatic transmissions that were very fun and fast!
BTW, define "enthusiast"? Is this someone that doesn't believe in automatic transmissions?

I like a GOOD auto tranny. One that kicks down with immediacy. I have a MCC I use on weekends and drive an '04 Prius to work during the week. Would NEVER drive a manual to work as it's too involved in the stop and go traffic I face. I would love to test drive the "S" with the new auto. I may be tempted to trade the Prius!
I am waiting for the Auto.
I had a 1997 Prelude with the Sportshift Auto. That car was a blast. It would let you run up to the 8000 rpm redline and hold it there. Flick the handle and it would shift as fast as I ever could, while holding the revs up. Which is important in that Honda.
I look at the new automatics as the best of both worlds. Shift when you want or let the car take over when you don't. Choice is a good thing.

If it had a DSG box and an LSD option, I'd be fairly tempted!
Don't get too excited.....no, it's not the SMG transmission; it's a "typical" auto with paddles; see here for latest ----->

Does anyone know if the new MCS automatic "steptronic" 6-spd. is just an updated version of the one previously sold in the MGF?
See this site:

It is described as a CVT with six "pre-selected gears" or ratios.

Now that MINIUSA has released the ratios for the new "S" automatic:
Transmission type = AISIN Automatic
Gear ratio 1st / 2nd / 3rd = 4,044 / 2,371 / 1,556
Gear ratio 4th / 5th / 6th = 1,159 / 0,852 / 0,672
Reverse gear ratio = 3,193
Final drive ratio = 3.683
This info came from a "Motoringfile.com" feature today.
What are the ratios in the "05" manual 6 speed for comparison.

Mmmmm, not quite.
According to MINI's official figures 0-62 mph takes 7.9 seconds with the auto and 7.2 seconds with the manual tranny.
