R50/53 Stuck in limp mode (2005 Mini Cooper automatic R50)
Stuck in limp mode (2005 Mini Cooper automatic R50)
Where to begin....
Everything started with a leaky transmission seal in the driver side. A local mechanic (non-mini) told me that it was a simple procedure to replace the seal and the CV axle also had to be replaced. No big deal, the guy also replaced the other side a few years ago. Somewhat a normal procedure. A few things went horrible wrong this time:
- Since it was a leak the car needed a bit of transmission fluid
- to access the plug you need to take the battery out (and ECU)
- found out that another part was needed. There is a plastic T that connects hoses that carry coolant, it is plastic so therefore destined to fail but had to go to the dealership the next day to pick it up
- left the car basically with no battery plugged in nor ECU overnight
- came back the following day with the part. The mechanic changed it but the car won't start. He was going to do research and come back
- the mechanic didn't come back the next day
- I thought that maybe because it was left overnight maybe the ECU got corrupted somehow
- Tested with ODBii - Got P0500 - cleared, nothing after that
- Attempted to reset the ECU using the reset procedures found in this forum. (key pos 1 + Reset button) -> option 19 -> TEST ->option 21 -> RESET
- Nada
- My mechanic was still MIA
- I thought that may be the anti-theft... got a hold of a locksmith that makes keys for BMW and MINI. Good guy, hooked up his computer and found the problem. The car was thinking that was currently on DRIVE and not PARK... ok. My mechanic didn't plug the sensor well and had transmission fluid in it. Got that taken care of.
- The car cranked!!! yay!!!
- Tried to test drove the car... Dreaded EP - Limp mode (2k rpm and 10mph).... got a few errors in the ODBII P0705 1/2 and P0705 P 2/2
- cleared the codes, cleared EP
- Tried again to drive, back on EP, back on 1 P0705
- Went into the gearbox I have previously worked on, unplugged cable (maybe that is where the sensor is located??), replugged
- Cleared codes
- Test drove, back to EP but no codes this time....
I am literally out of ideas. My best guess is that something got unplugged or broken by my (still missing) mechanic (former). Do you guys mind helping this poor stranded Mini owner please? Ideas are more than welcomed!! Thank you in advance!

Sorry to hear of your issues :(
I have an AWESOME 2006 R50!!!!!
I have had the tranny fluid replaced and watched the Mini Dealership do it!!
NO battery removal or anything else removed. The 05 and 06 are nearly identical so I do not understand what your mechanic did ????????
Any pics ???
How many miles ?

and was running solid, with the normal defects
but its such a lovely model. My dealership somewhat refused to change the transmission fluid. I was told that it might not work again lol. The SA is something else. I know the guy from BMW (also a BMW owner). Unfortunately I refused to take it to the dealer but now its sure start looking like I'll have to (unless y'all can help!)..I forgot to add that by replacing the bleeder valve air might have been entering the system but I don't think that would be enough to put it in limp mode, would it?
mmmmmmm
my tranny fluid bolts are not in that location. Easily accessible from underneath the car.
Are you sure its an 2005 ?
What are the last 7 numbers of the vin#
I would bring it to the dealer without question. They work on these cars all the time and can tell you exactly what any issues are.
Good Luck my fellow R 50 owner !!!!!
