R50/53 Race car Battery
Race car Battery
Well the battery in my R53 has gone and died,
Given that its edging more and more towards track spec I had a chat with a battery manufacturer out here to see what was new.
They looked at the original specs then advised that this would be a good option -
Lithium Ion battery with 500CCA and weight of 4lbs.
Anyone used or using anything similar? I'm awfully tempted to get one and give it a go
Cheers

I would be very wary of lithium ion batteries, for obvious explodey reasons. Now lithium iron phosphate batteries, those are another story and are awesome in every way. Same weight savings but no explosions if you get rear-ended. I think Shorai makes one, and A123 has them listed but I don't see where to buy them.
EDIT: Scorpion and Antogravity also make LiFe starter batteries.

I've got two motorcycles, both have Lithium Ion batterys. I drive one of the two "daily" for the last 4 years.
The ONLY problem I've had in those 4 years, when the voltage regulator died, the system over charged the battery, it melted...did not explode.
Cold start, no problem, even on 35 degree 4:30am mornings.
Not cheap, but I don't have a problem using them. If I had a race car, I'd probably use one (Lithium Ion or lithium ion phosphate).

My opinion, unless your car is fully stripped, gutted, AC removed and you are skinny enough to make your doctor say “go eat a cheeseburger and wash it down with a milkshake,” I see no point in spending money on this type of battery yet. It is a new technology, very expensive, and the track record of these is yet to be proven. The saying is simplify, then add lightness. Lithium at this point is not simplifying. Right now I’m eating salads (I’m a cheeseburger, fries and milkshake kind of guy) trying to add lightness to my track car. Losing 10 pounds on a motorcycle makes much more of a difference than losing 30 in a car.
