R50/53 Restoring Your Black Exterior Trim
Restoring Your Black Exterior Trim
Wanted to pass this black trim restoration product on to the forum because I am so pleased with the product and results (I have no connection to the product just stumbled across it).
Its called "Solution Finish" below is the Amazon link.
A 1 oz. bottle cost about $12.50 (some of the best money I've spent on my Cooper.
1 oz. will do 3 cars, so don't be concerned about the size of the bottle and it is a piece of cake to use. You need a pair of disposable gloves and a small 1" x 2" closed cell sponge (like a piece of foam) or you can use a patch of a micro towel. You wipe the trim with alcohol and a lint-free rag. Then you apply a "little" Solution Finish to the sponge/towel and wipe the trim (a little bit on the sponge goes a long way and as you work the sponge become completely saturated. But don't start out saturating the sponge). The stuff goes on easy, you can see what you're doing and won't hurt your paint. You simply use a paper towel to wipe off the excess on the trim and overage on the paint as you work. Took me about an hour to do my Cooper.
You can see the result on my 2006 JCW that I'm selling in my Gallery and the stuff appears to last.
Here's the 5 minute Youtube that convinced me to give it a try.
Hope it what some of you have been looking for.

I am a born skeptic. Come back after a few months and tell us it is still holding up.
The black plastic fade is due to oxidation and UV damage. Unless this wonder product has black pigment to make up for the fade it is just a short term fix. There are two real solutions:

- Replace them with new.
- Paint them professionally with automotive paint - I done this on a badly faded Sprinter.
Have not tried that stuff thanks for posting that up, just been using this CG every once in a while. I used to detail cars back in the day and the cheap fix was to use that shoe polish liquid in a bottle (renew). But I just use chemical guys stuff.

The best look is painted black or body color but that can cost some money:
